Yes--would you be able to help us out with the proper commands--that's where I get all snarled up...

Yes, but I thought you already reloaded Windows. Let me know your current status and we'll go from there.
Edit: I see you're not the original poster, but if someone can provide me with an update as to where he's at, I can walk you through DOS.

unfortunately for that scenario, DOS doesnt read NTFS file system unless you use a module to mount NTFS volumes.

there is an NTFS version of DOS on the Boot CD in my FAQ

***** thanks for all the replys.

I have done nothing ... here is an update of the situation.

I got the original NTOSKRNL.exe error and so I followed all the helpful links and such that everyone sent and I think I got the file replaces using the recovery console.

Now when I boot up instead of the NTOSKRNL.exe thing I get a message that says HAL.DLL is missiong or corrupt.

So what I did was I tried to just do the repair thing (because I finally figured that out) and it deleted all the old system files, assuming it left all the data I had untouched, and then when copying the new files off the XP Disk to the HD it got to 22% and started saying it couldnt copy "such n such" file. so I said screw it and called a computer store down the street. They said if I brought it in tomorrow they could help ... so I guess Ill do that unless you people have suggestion.

I do not have a floppy drive .. it died a wile back and I was too cheap to buy a new one.

I have a 120gig HD and it is only like 55% full .. so prolly room to partition .. if I knew how.

Oh yea... and when I tried to use the recovery console to rebuild the boot.ini it says it cant scan and told me to run CHKDSK .... so I did and it told me nothing was wrong. ***?

dont take it to the shop.......they'll charge you for doing something you can easily learn to do yourself quite quickly. (I know I fix computers for a living )

if you download the boot CD in my FAQ it has some partitioning tools.

use partition magic.....select your HDD.....select "resize" then move the slider from the left until you make the original partition the smallest that you are able to.

then in the blank space to the right click and select "create" then make a partition that fills the rest of the HDD. (make sure cluster size is default and use the ntfs file system)

after that apply and just let the program do it's thing until you get the complete message....you now have 2 partitions.

EDIT: the thought just occurred to me that after you partition, just install windows on the new partition and then you can edit your boot.ini in wondows to remove the other install from the boot options and you can just delete the windows directory on the other partition.
