ok...does it still show your saved space on the disk...i.e your OS?
Go back to the repair thingy and try again...and set your bios to default...or take out the bios battery then try it

anyone have any other ideas on how to get this back going?

The computer store down the street says they can do it ... for $160

thats waaayyy too much for something I know is not that hard .... I just need a bit of help doing it.

If I had another computer with windows on it could I load the HDD with the corrput copy as a slave drive and get to the data that way?

I dont know anything about installing a Slave drive so Ill need a little biot of a walkthrough

let me ask this since theres a lot of post and not sure what has been done.. basicly you had a bad system file.. you have booted with a boot cd that will let you read an ntfs drive as well and replaced the missing or corrupt file right.. did you bother doing that with the HAL as well.. or did you skip that file and just go for the partition.. and yes using it as a slave drive would work.. just look at the jumper settings on your harddrive.. you should see.. MASTER SLAVE AND CS( cable select) just put the jump on the slave and connect it to the same ide cable as your master drive on the system.. then browse the system for the files you are missing or corrupt and replace.. you might have to try to boot the other drive a few times till you get all the corrupt files.. also i would run some sorta of diagnostics on that drive as well while you have it slaved up to the other pc
