What does it take to run a Minecraft server?

I have been thinking about making a minecraft server for my friends and I. I don't have a lot of money, so I can't build one, but I do have some old P4 machines around the house. Would they be able to run a minecraft server or are they too slow?

The processor would suffer when people warped, and depending on clock speed, may die in general. Also, if it doesn't have AT LEAST 2gb of RAM, the world would be super limited or slow.

So basically, at least 3.0ghz (overclocked is fine) and 2gb of RAM. That's bare minimum. Mine has an E3300 and 4gb of RAM, and is gonna be upgraded to a Q9300 soon.

So a P4 w/ HT at 3.0 might be a little slow?

I'm running mine on an E6750 @ 3.4ghz, 2gb of RAM, and a slow-ass IDE hard drive and it runs flawlessly. It would run on a lot less hardware than that, unless you plan on allowing 20+ people. The server is not hardware intensive at all.
Finally an update

Ok, well I would never probably have more than 10 people on at a time unless I decided to open it up to OCN users. Unfortunately the rig I want to use it on has only 1GB of DDR, so I would need more and DDR is expensive. It would also need a HDD.

How many people are on yours at once? Mine struggled on 2gb. It was also the processor I guess... I think your P4 may struggle, but if you can find a cheap chip that's a core 2 duo, it may be better.

I don't know how, unless it's all the mods you run or how you have it configured. Mine is completely vanilla and there's only 250mb allocated to the server by default. I've never seen less than 25-30% of that free (runs at 45% free with no one on) with 3-5 people playing. The CPU is hardly off idle at any time. I don't see him having any problems with 1gb and a decent clocked, HT P4 and ten people.

Hmm, I may just have to try it to find out. Oh, and getting a C2D would not be possible since it is a socket 478 and my CPU is one of the fastest, besides the extreme edition, made for the socket.
