Uhhh, well I have no Xbox but what I can tell you for sure is that first, you need in order to get any media onto your Xbox the required format, for example MP3 for music, Mpeg 4 (MP4) for video. You need to check the supported formats. Because if you can detect your Xbox on your PC, then it's easy as drag'n drop your media in the appropriate Xbox directory.

Yes .avi is a supported format. The media center you can install supports many formats (.wmv, .avi, etc...)

To answer your first question, you can have multiple OS's on your XBox, but as far as a simple software mod, I've never done it- I use a modchip (cheap and practical). If you do have multiple OS's on your XBox you will be able to play XBox live if the OS is on one of the 'hidden' HDD partitions and will go undetected by XBox Live.

Edit: Though Windows Media Center, you can share files via network.

No you cant go on live with a softmod, you'll get banned.

You can play any codec/file type using XBMC. You can also set up a XMB or Somba server on your pc to steam media. (i think thats the names, I sold my xbox a while ago)

You're correct. You can UNDO the softmod, but XBOX live also checks to see if your harddrive is "locked", which it is by default. When you mod your xbox you have to "unlock" it to mod it, so if you get rid of the softmod, make sure before you do relock the hd, theres an option for it in most dashboards.

I'd keep it modded and use some of the free online play services out there.

You can go on with a softmod, just use the installed Dashboard to temporarily shut the mod off. None of this nonsense of 'locked' HDD or anything - just use the installed function to turn it off and it works flawlessly. If you go on whilst the mod is still on, you will get banned - but Softmodded Xbox's can get on just by turning it off for a bit while you play.
