PSU Advice

Thread Starter
Hi , I just bought a BFG 6600gt agp card and the specs. say to use a min. 350 watt supply. I am using that now ( don';t know what brand) but is it enough to run the card properly? What would happen if it is not? Would an upgrade on the PSU be next?? I know these are silly questions but I had no idea about powersupply specs. LOL Please help. Thanks!!

well an upgrade would do you some good, i think it will be enough though.

it it werent, you would see it not boot, and beep at you

Ok, What do you think a good upgrade would be?? If one would be needed?
well if you have the funds, get it emediately! Saves lots of time and testing
other-wise you will need to test with a multimeter, can't rely on the bios voltage reading. good luck

No normally if your PSU doesn't supply enough power, it would be like a CPU overclock where you would be able to boot but when the CPU starts to reach 100% of use the computer would restart because of unsufficient power. You can get 500 Watt for around 60$, real cheap on newegg. I always aim at least 50 Watt higher than the card minimum requirement because you never know if you will get new card...

for your system you don't need anything too powerful, but you'll want a stable psu that you can trust.

I suggest this psu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954

it has dual 12v rails w/ 18a on each so it'll be powerful enough for everything you have and maybe an upgrade. Plus, it won't break the bank. FSP is a good company that makes quality psus
I have one running a rig like this:
Celly D 2.66 @ 3.0
Asus P5RD1-V mobo
1gb Corsair XMS DDR400
MSI 6600GT
SB Live! sound card
80gb hd
DVD-Rom

as you can see the psu is more than enough to run a system similar to yours.
I also had it in my HTPC for a short while and you can look at that system's specs in my sig

I can highly recommend seasonic from personal experience. This is probably a good size for your needs. I shouldn't even have to say this but since it's a top of the line power supply it puts out more power than a generic 500-550w. Also it will help cut down on the power bill as well has heat in the room with that 85% efficiency. Mine blows cold air at full load.
