Graphics settings have a mind of their own!

I do not seem to be able to adjust the brightness levels of my display adapter. Let me explain . This problem has been going on for years and occurrs when using either an ATI video card or Nvidia. I would like to boost the brightness of my screen when playing counter strike so that I can see better in tunnels. Sometimes the compuer will let me adjust the brightness and sometimes it will not. It is very confusing so I will talk about a problem it has all the time.

If I click on my disktop and go to properties/ settings / advanced / and finally to the geforce MX440 tab, I am presented with the means to adjust the brightness of the display adapter. These adjustments work and I click on apply. I set these adjustments to affect all profiles and everything seems great. I can then play a game or do whatever I want. BUT ! Next time I boot the computer my screen is back where it was. Again if I click on the desktop / properties / settings / adavanced......and here is the kicker......the second I click on the geforce tab.....it brightens up. I can see the adjustments are where I left them and everything is fine once again.

I have looked through my computer bios and everywindows setting I can find and I do not know why it does this. Beleive it or not, this happens or similar things happen using an ati video card, using different drivers and different monitors.

Question is....is there some sort of widows default video settings that needs to be disabled somewhere so that the nvidia adapter takes control all the time?

OS Windows XP pro
cpu Pentium 4 2.0A
Motherboard Gigabyte 8PE800
Ram 512 DDR
Geforce MX 440 64 mb mem 8X agp
Video bios version 4.18.20.30

Uhhh, make sure you have the latest video drivers, make sure that your graphic settings is correctly set in Counter Strike. I think you need to save the profile. Or save changes, I guess you did but just to remind you.

I have saved the settings every way I can. I have tried making my config file in my counter strike folder "read only" and that still does not hold onto the brighter settings. Really at a loss here.

in the game itself there should be a menu that allows you to adjust
video settings.
Specificly look for the word "Gamma" in among the video options.
"Gamma" is normaly controlled by a slider in most games.
That will adjust the brightness or visibility in the game and should stay
put until you adjust it again.
Worth a shot anyways.

The in game adjustments in the console of CS are among the first items I tried. They sometimes have a temporary affect and sometimes they do not. Those sliders often reset themselves to the center position the next time I pull them up or they remain at the higher level but have no affect.

These settings are reflected in the game's config file within the steam folder on my hard drive. I can change the "brightness value" directly within the config file and then lock the config file by making it "read only" but this still has no affect. YET sometimes it does. As I said my graphics settings seem to have a mind of their own. It's as if somewhere in my computer's bios or windows system folder there is something that prevents the graphics adapter from being able to adjust the brightness settings. But this comes and goes. This problem seems to only follow this one computer. The two graphics cards and their software work fine on a different computer I have.

Maybe I should just shoot it !

You might have already did this i dont know,

Try properly installing new whql drivers or even some enhanced drivers from guru3d and i think that problem could change, i liked how simple the options were with the ngo one, it was all laid out with the little tool that installed with it.
Then adjust the brightness and make a counter strike source profile again and see if that helps
good luck
