Best Multi-Tasking CPU?

Thread Starter
I have a dual core machine that just cant keep up with me. Its an Intel, but from what I see, it looks like I get a better bang for the buck with an AMD - so here I am. But here is the issue....

Several hours after I sit down at my PC, I manage to float back down to earth and find that I have:

Firefox: 3 to 5 WINDOWS running
- each window having 4 to 8 tabs opened to a different web pages

Microsoft Word
- anywhere from 3 to 10 files going

MS Excel
- anywhere from 2 to 4 workbooks w/1-5 spreadsheets each

Dream Weaver
- working on multiple pages on website(s)

PhotoShop
- tweeking some pix

I might also be burning a CD or a DVD of the website and pix Im working on..

All the while in the back ground Ive got a host of REAL TIME
- Anti-Virus Software checking and scanning the websites Im going to
- Anti-Phishing software
- Anti-this and that.. bla bla bla ...

So ... Having said all this ... Here is What Im considering .. and you guys who KNOW what your talking about, PLEASE give me your God Given Talents, Wisdom and Knowledge if you would please! ...

What would be Better, a 4 Core or a 6 Core CPU ?

Im running Windows 32 Bit, but that was only because the 64 Bit really didnt do anything for me when it was first released. All my software WAS 32 bit!

I now have:
MS Office 2007,
Adobe CS 3 (is 32 bit)

So .. What do yaz say? What do I need to get to avoid all the pauses, freezes and occasional lock ups I have? 4 core?, 6 core? ( I KNOW I really need to get the newer 64Bit CS5 suite, but thats $1,800.00 and I aint got that change right now!)

and oh .. I run two monitors too....

Its not that Im that smart ... Its just that a LOT is asked of me, and Ive got to respond to it in near Real Time in most cases...

Thank You for taking the time to help me out!!

You would be good with a 965, but just go for the 1055T, more cores never hurt anybody lol

how much are you willing to spend? and do you want us to spec out a full rig for you or just help with CPU, Mobo, and Memory?
With all that stuff open you will want 64bit so you can have more than 3.5gbs of ram...

and a quad will suffice but x6 cant hurt anything

You barely multitask. Fill in your system specs and tell us more about the anti-bla stuff you run.

What kind of other parts are we looking at for the rest of the system? Given your functions a i7 950 or a 1090T will work just fine. The rest really depends on what you have to spend on the rest of the system.

On a somewhat related subject why do you use firefox? I used to use it as well and switched to chrome as a lot of people suggested it and even more benchmarks showed it kicking the **** out of Firefox in response time and other functions. Just a thought if you're interested and want to free up some resources.

If stuff isn't working in the background, then you don't need a better CPU. What is your current CPU usage?

Having 100 windows open does not use that much more CPU cycles. If you have 2-3 application processing simutaneously, then you might need more CPU power. Having stuff open and suffering performance is usually due to insufficent RAM.
