Didn't seem to matter if it was formated or not. Figured it out though. I had the image in a different partition of the windows install HDD, and it didn't like that. I did that since my 500GB is full. Looks like I gotta go grab some laptop HDDs to hold it instead

Yeah sorry should have mentioned it doesn't like having the system images on the same physical device... pays to have external drive to do the job with...

To open Disk Management:

Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc

Nice guide! Personally, I'd do a fresh install every time but that's just me...

yep, normally I do the same, except in my case at least.

1. I had already reinstalled only 3 months or so before getting the SSD
2. I had already limited my C: drive to 80GB so I was ready for the discipline of keeping media and games off it
3. I had never done a full disk image restore... so I was keen to try something new.

That said, the way I tried is not the easy way I post here, and it wasn't easy LOL
Next time I will do this method, so much easier

Is there anyway to do this without the Windows 7 disc? I traded for this PC on Craigslist and I basically sold everything except for Optical Drive and one of the Hard Drives.

So it was basically a clean build but I didn't get the CD for Windows 7 Ultimate, I think I could e-mail the guy and maybe get the verification key if that could do anything.

when you make the backup, Windows Backup and Restore gives you the option to create a "Repair Disc" - You could use that.

Otherwise download a "recovery disc" from: http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/window...-repair-discs/

I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve tho?

It's simply one way to restore your image, it's not "required", since you're not reinstalling, you're simply restoring an image onto a new disk... same as if your HDD died and you bought a new one.

Windows 7 Setup, and Windows 7 Disk Management, basically all the ways you can make a partition using Windows 7, always create aligned partitions, unless you force them not to.

Unless you had a partition left over from Win XP and you didn't actually create a new one when you installed Win7... (just formatted the old one)
