Hey guys. I'm another of those noobies to the site. I'm also now about to finish building my first custom rig tomorrow...UPS had better not let me down! This is my first jump back into gaming on a PC, and satisfying the "geek" in my building my own rig. LOL.

Well, i was curious what everyone thought of the specs so far. It's basic for now, I plan on adding a GTX 470 (not sure of brand) and Windows 7 Home. I'm gonna set it up with Windows XP for now...get the hardware up and running pretty hard, see how she holds up! I know at some point in the next months I will go will better cooling for the quad core, considering the Corsair H50 if it will fit in my case, or possibly a cheaper fan-based unit....

I also plan on using the rig for DVD authoring. I play music and am thinking of recording instructional DVD's for my students, and possibly online lessons.
I also plan on getting into some gaming...nothing crazy. Fallout 3, Crysis, Doom 3, Halo, and some more older games that I never got to play on PC.

Thoughts?

Welcome to OCN!

Everything looks good, though I think 8GB of RAM is a bit overkill for your needs. Just as a tip, you won't be able to overclock much without that aftermarket cooler, so you can probably go up to 3.6-3.8ghz without adjusting the voltages and by just raising your CPU multiplier in your BIOS.

AMD should be releasing their 69xx series cards this week or next, so wait until those come out to see if the prices of current cards will go down a bit.

I hope everything ships without any DOAs and keep us updated on your progress!

Thanks Kokin. Got the system up and running 2 days ago with XP. Fast.....real fast...upgrading to 7 next week. Think I'm gonna get a 470 to round it out..
This thing is sweet! The processor sits around 38c on idle, has yet to get to 45 under load.
I think that is alright...

Loos okay, but I have my doubts. The motherboard has only a 4+1 power phase & no mosfet cooling. If you ever overclock or add a tower heatsink, you're pretty much dead - without a better 8+2 power phase for a 125W processor and without proper cooling, your mosfets could easily catch fire. I wouldn't call that OCZ the best power supply choice either, though it'll probably at least work.

Agreed on the mobo and psu but if he's only going to have a gtx 470 and a 3.8 ghz overclock or so, I don't think anything is in danger but I would make sure have good case airflow since your motherboard may get toasty.

also, Welcome to OCN biggrin.gif

I don't suspect i'll be looking into doing any overclocking....at least not for a long while. And once I add a stronger video card, 470 or not, that is probably the extent of additional hardware that i'll do with this pc, for my needs anyways.
Yes I will definetly be adding a few more good fans to this mix....
