MKG-RC1 (Driving Simulator scratch build log) - Page 10

So I went into work early this morning to clean up my mess. I have all the panels drying in a heated room. I'm going to let them cure for at least 2 more days before I dare stick tape on them for the rally stripes.

I think that I will just be doing black stripes now instead of black outlined by white. That way, I can get it done in less time instead of spraying the black, waiting forever for the paint to cure, and then painting the white.

I'm trying to come up with some designs for the stripes and heres where you guys can help! grouphug.gif

I am providing a blank template that all of you's can please feel free to use to come up with a design. Lets not get too complicated as I will have to lay it down with tape. Heres a outline of the general shape of the side of the machine, not perfectly to scale, but pretty close.

well, looks like I colored the 'blank' template in paint and overwrote it, but here is a scan or the one I drew by hand, not as handy I dont think, but maybe someone can print it, design it and scan it afterwards. That might work- anyway heres this-

mkgh.jpg

Heres a couple designs I did-

mkgraceroption1.jpg

mkgracer.jpg

I plan on putting my round MadKat logo in the big open area.
Here's a plan for the front/top/back this being the back (tail-lights)

madkatracerback.jpg

I ordered a 4x7" Wa State licence plate that reads MadKat last night wink.gif

I went today to the printer that made my stickers for me to get some big logo's and some MadKat Racing stickers, but they are only open Tues-Fri mad.gif

Anyway, Lets see some cool racing stripe designs please! Not too complicated is key and whatever color is fine, but the base color is the orange you see in the previous pictures.

Mad rep to the winning design! applaud.gif

I got my stickers printed up today smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif
I bought some 1/2" green tape and some 1 1/2" green too-
The stickers cost me $65 for 2 of each that you see in the picture below. The tape cost me about $10 for both rolls.

Heres a picture of the stickers wink.gif

dscn0443b.jpg

As much as I dont want to, I am going to give the paint 1 more full day to cure and will not start taping off the stripes until thursday after work. That will be 4 days of cure time. do you guys think that is enough? or should I wait for this weekend? No more opinions on the stripes?

EDIT- on second thought, I think I will wait until Saturday morning to paint the stripes. I'll be fresh in the morning and can take my time and do it right. Also, the extra cure time wont hurt any either. I would be sooo mad if paint came off along with the tape! I am worried enough about the paint leeching under the tape as it is.

def can't hurt to wait...what kind of temps do you have where the parts are sitting at the moment?

how porous are the side panel's surfaces? the green is def your best bet for paint not going under the tape.

It's probably about mid 60's during the day, but I think that the heat gets shut off when the boss goes home and its in the 30's outside. If I put on the tape Saturday morning, the panels will have been curing for 6 days.

oh yeah, that's fine...as long as there is good adhesion to the surface below you will be golden...the green tape is the stickiest of them all...but the best.

Thanks Nightm4re- I like the orange too, it should look really good when I get the stripes and clearcoat done blushsmiley.gif

I got off work at 3:00 and buffed out the orange paint with some scotch-bright with a low speed polisher and a bit by hand. Tomorrow I think I will go get some tack-cloth to get any dirt or fibers off the surface.

My plan is to go into work early Sat morning and lay down the stripes in green tape, cover the rest with paper or plastic, and the return on Sunday after the Seahawks game and wipe em down again with the tack-cloth and spray the racing stripes black.

Then I guess I will have to let it cure- again...- then maybe a little scotch-bright rubbing on the stripes, then more tack-cloth wiping, then clearcoat medium gloss (satin I guess) on the outside. Hopefully I will have the panels back home not this weekend, but next-

I HATE waiting for paint to dry gunner.gif

After we see how the stripes turn out, there wont be any updates, except for spraying the clear, for like a week or more while I let the clear dry for a few days..
