ugrading from HD 4870

Thread Starter
In order to get a new Video Card that should last me at least throughout the next year maybe two years, should i upgrade my HD 4870 to maybe a GTX 460 or 470? what cards would you recommend for this type of upgrade? is there a specific brand that stands out in Nvidia cards like XFX/sapphire does in AMD cards? would love any information you could send my way about what cards to consider, budget is anything around the $200 - $250 range

thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Of the choices you have listed, (460/470) neither. IF you absolutely need to have DX11, then your best choice for cards in the price range is a 5850. Other than a few games, like Metro 2033 and STALKER CoP, the 5850 clearly beats the 470 by quite a healthy margin.

Too bad your board doesn't have 2 PCIex16 slots, otherwise you could have just picked up another 4870 and have the same performance as the 5850 (more or less).

As for which one to get, something like this XFX 5850 for $184.99 after MIR wouldn't be bad.
As for the XFX brand, some people have said that their tech support sucks, I haven't found that to be the case. When I purchased my first 4870, I had some issues with it. I sent their tech support a trouble ticket and got a response in 2 hours. Turns out there was something wrong with the BIOS and they had a new one out in a matter of a couple of days. Flashed it, no more problems.

At any rate, a 5850 would be your best bet for your price range.

see i had heard some things about the 460 GTX ftw that was essentially putting it up to standards with the newest cards coming out with its ability to OC and already stock increased in performance, from everything i have read its more or less a toss up between that and the 5870 series.

bringing up this post again with another update, i believe i have finally settled on sticking with AMD and going with a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161330 should already be a fairly large performance boost over my 4870, gives me DirectX11 capabilities and has a price tag that SCREAMS Crossfire me!

the thought alone is getting me way too excited for this!
