i7-980 Extreme And Triple SLI GTX 580 - Page 5

So, after reading through the posts, and giving it some thought, I think I may just go with the SR-2 board and dual i7-980x chips. I probably would have in the first place, but my brother told me that the chipset wasn't compatible. I guess he must have been really tired when he told me that.

Anyway, if I can figure out what to do with the Rampage III Extreme mobo and mobo cooler, then I will be placing orders for the SR-2, another i7 980x, and respective mobo cooler. What do you guys think?

I think you are gonna need a bigger boat, err... case. Not many cases can handle a server board.

980x doesn't work in an SR-2. You need a 5000 series server chip like these.

You do know the Core i7 980X cannot run with another CPU, right? If going the route of an SR-2, you need to sell the 980X you already have and get the equivalent Xeon, which is the Xeon X5680. That times two.
If that's too expensive you can get a cheaper 6-core, the Xeons have a much nicer selection.

You cant use dual i7s, you need the xeon equivalent for that, and those are generally a bit more money. And you will likely need a larger case for that massive motherboard

edit: I should have refreshed the page before i posted

I'll bump as well to make sure this guy just didn't order another 980x, it's been awfully silent here.

The guy who funded an 8K build?

I wouldn't waste the money trying to sell the 980X and RIIIE. Unless, of course, you really want an SR-2 build.

Good luck, can't wait to see the finished product!

Ok, so my brother was right in saying that the i7 wouldn't work. That's fine. I will just continue with my plan. I have no need to really upgrade to server processors. Maybe in 10 years I will make something with what will be the equivalent of the SR-2. Makes things easy now as well since I don't have to get rid of anything. Thanks!
