AMD 6870 Overclocking

Thread Starter
Like to know if anyone has been overclocking the AMD 6870? I've got a Biostar running at core clock 900Mhz and memory clock at 1050Mhz stock.

I've got two 200mm CoolerMaster fans one top one front and one 140mm Promiltach vortex side fan in my case.

Here are the stats on the AMD 6870 by manufacturer with core and clock speeds in case anyone was interested as a side note. The XFX comes with the highest core clock and memory clock settings.

Manufacturer / Core Clock / Memory Clock

Biostar
900Mhz / 1050Mhz 4.2Gbps
Sapphire
900Mhz / 1050Mhz 4.2Gbps
HIS OC
920Mhz / 1120Mhz 4.48Gbps
XFX Black Edition ---940Mhz / 1150Mhz 4.6Gbps
MSI
900Mhz / 1050Mhz / 4.2Gbps
Gigabyte
900Mhz / 1050Mhz 4.2Gbps
Diamond
900Mhz / 1050Mhz 4.2Gbps
ASUS
913Mhz / 1050Mhz 4.2Gbps

I ran my Biostar at XFX Black Edition spec levels 940Mhz core clock and 1150Mhz memory clock to hit 4.6Gbps playing Crysis. Auto fan settings.

At 90% activity reached 75C temp and fan speed at 31%....still quite fan btw.
At 97% activity reached 77C temp and fan speed at 32%.
At 99% activity reached 77C temp and fan speed at 33% for over 12 mins when it seemed to stabilize and go up and down from 76C to 77C consistently.

Back down to idle with no acitivity and it went down to 59C with 27% of fan speed where is stayed consistent.

Like to know what is a safe overclock on the AMD 6870 card? What temp on video cards are the top one can go safely without frying it or windows becoming unstable? How long can one sustain higher temps before damage starts to occur?

Again thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to respond who's done some OC'ing on the 6870. I've never overclocked a video card before.

80C+ should be the max range you are looking for if you are overclocking by a lot. Theoretically these GPUs are designed to withstand max temperature of around 100C, but many do not recommend going beyond 90C. So 80C+ should be fine, especially with a stock cooler.

To check for stability, go search for a program called Furmark, run it for like 15mins to test for stability after each clock adjustment. If the program hangs halfway, that means your clock is too high, back down and try again.

So I guess you can try to push your clock higher as long as furmark is stable and the temp is good. Because who knows, you could have gotten a good GPU that has good potential. biggrin.gif

OCCT is better than furmark imo because it has an error checker

hey guys i would just like to know how exactly you are overclocking so damn high, because i have a XFX 6870 and when i try to overclock anything past 950mhz core and 1150mhz mem, then the screen rolls and my computer freezes. Also im running a brand new motherbaord and a dedicated 500w psu for my gpu and a 350w psu for motherboard and case accessories.

I had to up my voltage to 1.3. The highest recommended voltage on Air. Than use GPU Tool & OCCT to stress test the overclocks. Increase Core and Memory one at a time and stress until you get errors are artifacts. Once you find the max for both core and memory, Try testing until you find a happy medium. On another note, being stable in a program is one thing. Being stable in game is what matters. Doesn't be surprise if you crash ingame even though your "stable". As long as your temps are under 85 under load, you're good.
