Well mine hasn't asploded yet. Maybe I got lucky?

Would the upgrade to the 580 be worth the extra 150$?

I got 4ghz stable. Lol. What're your specs?

Whats your vcore at when you try 3.5ghz? Also what are your temps?

I wouldn't consider the Zalman 9900 MAX to be "really good" sorry to say. It might not be able to handle the heat from 4ghz.

Just depends on what you are going to do with it. If you plan on oc'ing it and leaving it oc'ed all summer long, might not be a bad idea, but only a handful have been reported dying so it is few and far between.

Well I haven't been able to get 900 stable so I only game at 850mhz with 1.063v and the temps haven't gone over 65*c since I got it.

My PC is in my basement with only one window so heat shouldn't be too bad.

I think I'll keep this 570 until I get closer to my 54 days left of step up.

Thanks for the advice though.

If you're gaming, the performance difference between 850MHz and 900MHz is insignificant to be noticeable. The same can be said for upgrading to a GTX 580 if you're gaming on a 1080p or smaller display - for the ~15% performance increase, you're paying close to $10 per percentage point. To put it another way, if you're getting 45fps in Crysis now, you'll be looking at roughly 49fps. It's an arbitrary example, but it should illustrate the point - you're better off saving your money for a more significant upgrade down the line, like Kepler, or getting a second GTX 570. In my opinion, if you're going to upgrade, make it a real upgrade.

As for all the reports about cards burning up, unfortunately, that's the risk you take with any sort of overclocking. Nothing is ever guaranteed for anybody, but if you understand the risks and understand the limits to overclocking any particular component, you will minimize the potential harm to your hardware. If you're being sensible and responsible, you shouldn't have much of any problems running a healthy and stable overclock. That being said, where there's a will there's a way; and I'm sure sooner or later people will find ways to fry GTX 580's regardless of how many more VRM's they have

Your scaring me because I'm new to CPU overclocking. I used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility 2.0 and just went up on the software 'Host Clock Frequency'.

That's it. I run the stress test and went up incrementally in small amounts. I didn't want to push it any further because I was afraid. LOL.

Beside I'm happy where I'm at now anyway. Got a great rig (in my own opinion) and great video card. Hope I didn't do anything wrong.

My idle cpu temps are:
CPU Core #1 39C
CPU Core #2 34C
CPU Core #3 37C
CPU Core #4 35C

Would it be safe to say that 580s have a very good chance of hitting 900mhz?

I'm contemplating upgrading this 470 and a 900mhz 580 would last me a very good long time.

You are doing fine, so dont be afraid
Like I reply to you on last page, that I have my CPU @ 3.8GHz with stock voltages. And then for benching stable 4.2GHz @ 1.4

actually now looking "old" pics of OC, it was even under 1.4 V
