Just ordered a Gainward GTX 570 Phantom, should be here tomorrow. Im so exited ! Have been using a 5 years old X1650XT for a month Noticed there has been a lot of interest in this card, but not a lot of info and not many people own one, so I might do a little unboxing and mini review when it gets here

Hello i reformated my whole PC today. So i reinstalled MSI afterburner and forgot to put my auto fan on.

Now i played Battlefield 2 Project Reality for 6 hours at 95 degrees without noticing it. I checked the afterburner and it said max temp 95 C° And max fan speed 40 Percent. I instanly fixed the auto fan and now the temps are ok again.

I am afraid now that i damaged my graphic card. Since i am a maniak i constanly worry when i do little things to my expensive stuff. For example i drop my Ipod i will worry it will break or be damamged inside.

So let me get this straight You ran your card at stock settings and it is still okay?
Yes, that is sarcasm. Instead of turning the fan up, cut back on your game time.

I did something similar when running the Heaven benchmark. I ended up turning the fan up to 70% to cool the card off after a previous Heaven run. Then got sidetracked so I moved the slider down to 40 percent and clicked apply and then when I finally came back to my PC I tweaked a few more things and ran the bench again before I realized that max temp was steadily rising upwards of 85*C! I nearly pooped myself because the fan never ramped past the 40% I set.

Then I looked at the results and it seems that I got marginally better FPS when the card as running hot (like 1-2FPS). But since that day I have just set my fan profile to being 1% fanspeed per 1*C and it never ramps faster than 65% fans while playing Metro.

These babies are made to handle nearly 100*C of heat before they start failing, and even then it's not like it will asplode. It would more likely start to throttle itself. Which I think is what was happening to your card as the max temp on these cards is 97*C and I would imagine Nvidia set the throttle point to be a few degrees before absolute max. I think that your card is AOK though.

Just don't push it so hard without fans anymore!

Other GTX 500 series news.

"Nvidia said Thursday that it has now sold 1 billion GeForce GPUs.

Nvidia launched the Geforce in 1999 with the GeForce 256, and the Nvidia GPU series has progressed through several iterations since then - from the GeForce 2 through the GeForce 9, including the GeForce FX, and then on to the GeForce 100 to the GeForce 500 series.

Nvidia also provided the the standard metrics for evaluating the impact of the one-billion mark, such as noting that the chips, lined up, would wrap around the world more than twice, or stretch across 315,000 football fields.

The tally includes Nvidia's desktop chips - including the recent release of the GeForce GTX 570 and the GeForce 500M-series mobile GPUs."

Full read can be found here. All I can say is wow that's a lot!

They came out about a month ago and said that they did. I remember seeing the thread before.

I still think it's awesome that theres a landmark card running out there and no one even knows it. I hope they at least made it a 580. Lol.

EDIT: Yeah, this article is from a month ago. Still relevant news though.
