I had to back down to stock clocks in order to get it to play right, and even then I'm getting flickering problems that are associated with multiple GPU's.

Apparently, this will require waiting for the next set of beta drivers from Nvidia before this is playable in Surround. All I can say is that for me, and those who have similar setups to mine, this upgrade was not ready for prime time just yet.
I might try using something other than 266.58 again tonight. I can't understand how my 580 can't pull off 850 core under 1.1v.

And as far as I know if it was CPU overclock related it would happen in other games and applications as well. I played Mafia II for 2 hours before trying out the new patches for Crysis 2 and it never stuttered once. But as soon as I turn on my OC on the 580 all hell breaks loose in Crysis 2 world.

Does anyone think it's GPU instability? Game black screens during Crysis 2 while still playing sound but never specifically mentions Nvidia driver error which I got before from an unstable OC in Vantage.

I thought that if it was a bad CPU OC it would blue screen or something to that effect. It didn't fail when doing the CPU tests in Vantage which should have put it over the edge.

And I see the GPU clocks hitting rock bottom but no error log on screen. Is there another place to look for error logs?

In your situation, you can easily rule out the GPU overclock by running at stock clocks. When I did that for my setup, I was able to stay in the game without any crashes or hard locks, but it was unbearable to play due to the flickering issue.

I'm not entirely discounting bad CPU overclocking as memory clocks, timings, Uncore, and QPI can all still play a part in giving the same black screen symptoms while in game, in my experiences. However, combining the black screen with the fact that I am getting the known flickering with multi-GPU setups (when the game is "stable" at stock clocks), I'm more inclined to point the finger at the game itself, drivers, and/or GPU clocks being the culprit. All of my other games (save for BF:BC2 and the refresh rate problem) run just fine on my GPU overclocks with the latest official release drivers.

Nvidia has already expressed that they are going to release a compatibility driver soon, which I assume means that they are also doing further work down the line for performance as well (I hope). I still have yet to even get past the first 10% of this game, and from the looks of it, it will still be some time before I can even come close to beating it.

Yeah I was able to play just fine at stock for a few minutes but framerate was too low. That's when I used the OC profile and saw that it wouldn't run for more than a few seconds without crashing.

I think I'm going to run a few hours of either IBT or OCCT: Linpack tonight and see what goes down. Max temps on CPU in game were 61C so I'm hoping it's something as simple as needing more volts. I'm okay up till 1.32v for this OC. Any more than that and I'm going to switch to SB.

All this comes at a time when I wanted to crank my OC to 4.2 too. Maybe this is my opportunity.

I share your frustration with overclocking the 580. I'm stuck at 930mhz and no matter how much voltage I add it still crashesat anything higher. Leave it to me to get the worst of the best overclocking 580's available...

It's funny because I can run 970Mhz 1.15v in the Metro2033 bench, but in Heaven 2.5 I have to run 925-930Mhz.

No doubt. Stability is relative to the application(s) being used.

Can anyone direct me towards a guide or explain to me what my settings should be within the nvidia control panel regarding video settings and such? I'm coming from ATI and the nvidia settings seem to be much more detailed.

Picked up an EVGA GTX 570 reference card, overclocked it to ~850mhz and ran some games and OCCT - seems to be safe, but now I'm reading all this crap about how they're easy to fry? Should I be worried or is the model I picked up good to go?

I'm not overvolting, should I be worried even if I'm not getting artifacts or performance issues? I mean I took it for a 2 hour Crysis 2 marathon and it was fine.

Its funny, the past cards that I've owned (9800 Pro, 6800 GT, 4870) I researched a lot before buying, and they didn't perform/OC as expected.... I like how I just bought this impulsively after looking at some benchies online in the store, and it turns out to be a complete beast.

I usually leave everything stock with the exception of:

Power Management Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance
Texture Filtering: High Quality

Anything else can be changed on a per-game basis if needed.

There aren't as many reports of dead reference 570s lately, might have been a bad batch of mosfets or something that was an issue besides the lack of power phases. If you aren't overvolting at all there should be zero issues, & have read that at 1.100V or less people rarely burn the VRMs.
