That's just the complex nature of over clocking. Voltage does not have a direct linear relationship with speed. Sometimes you need a bit more, sometimes you need a lot, and sometimes no matter how much you push through- it won't go higher.

That being said, some of the time with what you explained; it is not truly stable. I've had this happen to me a few times, I bumped up the core and it didn't need any additional voltage to be stable enough to run a bench; but then it crashed a few hours later.

Oh and it is hard to tell because we don't know your wall as you are limited by your cooling, but your cards scale pretty well- I'd call them good.

That's the thing though. The only time these cards are running an overclock at all is when I'm benching. And since I don't bench for a living it only needs to last that 3-5 minutes at a time.

Stability is not my concern, points are.

I'm running single monitor with two 580s. If I need an overclock to play a game on a single screen I expect all you guys to have me committed.

Right now I want the #7 spot. 11 measly points. I should have just run it again. I'll get that spot tomorrow. Then he'll just take it again. :/

Mod the bios, push a bit more voltage and crank that fan to 100%- you'll pass him.

Yeah mod those bios and add more voltage for sure. With 580's I wouldn't even be concerned about it. Just keep the fans cranked at 100% and like you said it's only for few minutes anyway.

I'm noticing some of the top scorers aren't oc'ing the ram that high. I can hit 2425 on my cards but I'm going to lower it a bit and see if I can up the core to 960-965. Also, Im really itching to get a decent set of sticks than my pats

Peer pressure!

NOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oo

First I want to see what's the extent of overclock I can get out of 1.15v. Who knows I may be able to push 950. It's a wish I'd like to see come to fruition but I won't know til tomorrow. Rig is sleeping right now. Shhhhhh. She did good tonight.

One thing I'm not happy about is my rig has boot problems.

Push power button and fans start whirring then bam, off. Five seconds later it restarts itself like nothing ever happened and boots into Windows normally.

I read somewhere that it may be tied to PLL Overvoltage but I don't really want to disable it so I'm gonna have to deal with the aggravation for now. :/

Or maybe I need a new BIOS. I've been running the stock BIOS from day 1.

I don't touch memory until I find my max core, then I start raising the memory. This helps getting the best score as memory does a bunch of diddly.

EDIT @ black- I had the same issues and a bios update solved it.

Exactly what he said.

All raising the memory clock does is increase the risk of bricking the card and doesn't improve scores much, if at all.

I never found it necessary to increase past where I'm at. I remember back when the 570s first came out a guy was running his memory at 2300 for a few weeks and card became so unstable that he was getting artifacts at stock.

I will most likely lose my OC settings, correct?

Will I have to retest stability, AGAIN?!

Usually you are stable at the same exact settings, they may change slightly however. What I do before I update bios because I am lazy is take pictures/write down my settings so I can plug and play after I update.

But yes, you lose your settings.

Man... all this talk about benching scores and I can't even complete a single run of 3DMark 11 at all, lol. It always hangs while loading the final Combined Test. I'm pretty sure it means I have an unstable CPU overclock, but this is the only thing that even shows a hint of instability.
