I actually had a similar problem last night.

I hadn't ran heaven since I got the beta drivers, last night it literally wouldn't run a bench mark with out crashing. I even turned the clocks way way down.

It would start flashing and studdering and finally just freeze up the computer. The temps were all normal nothing was over heating.

not sure but I went to bed before I figured it out, I'll tinker later

Yeah, it's bothering the hell out of me that I can't complete a single run of 3D11. sozo.gif

Would a 7950 beat a GTX 580 on one monitor? I don't plan on sli or eyefinity. Just one 1920x1080 screen. Does the 7950's Vram help or is the GTX 580 all I need? Also I own a GTX 570. Is the 7950 or 580 a big upgrade or just a little boost? Thanks

Ironic, I had the same issue. When I installed the new driver I couldn't run 3DMark11 at 950mhz as with the previous drivers (285.62); I could not get past the 1st round of the 3DMark11 test at the same settings as with the previous driver (950 clock and voltage at 1.05 or a bit higher). So, I reset both cards to standard clock speed (850) and voltage; no problems – zipped through the benchmark. Next test I left the voltage at stock, but put the clock speed back to 950mhz and walla, it zipped through with no problem. So what I’m thinking is the OC's don’t need as much voltage as with the previous driver. Can anyone confirm this?

Oh and one good thing with the new driver is my cards temperature at idle is waaaaay cooler; Card 1 is at 29* down from 51-53* and Card 2 is at around 25* down from 41*. Maybe this is tied back to the lower voltage requirement, too. Not conclusive yet though, go figure. I will continue tweaking and see what I get.

Has anyone noticed lower temps with the new driver?

Try and lower your voltage a bit or put it back to stock and see what happens.

Al

Here's the Nvidia thread on this driver that may shed some light.

On 285 WHQLs they both ran 935MHz without a hiccup. Now I can't even run 900 @ 1.15v. It either crashes BEFORE the first test even loads completely or crashes within 6 seconds during test. Temps didn't even have a chance to get above 45c.
I am really PO'd and a bit confused as to how drivers can affect benchmarks THIS much. I haven't tried any lower than 900MHz because I was so PO'd from running 935 and having it crash, running 925 and having it crash, and finally running 900 and voila, more crashing.

1:
Stock
2:
+12 Voltage (0.975v at stock, so +12 = 0.987v)
Core Clock = 800
Shader Clock = 1600
Memory Clock = 2150 (with the current Nvidia drivers, I can't go further it seems)

3:
+25 Voltage
Core Clock = 850
Shader Clock = 1700
Memory Clock = 2150

4:
+62 Voltage
Core Clock = 890
Shader Clock = 1780
Memory Clock = 2150

5:
+125 Voltage
Core Clock = 950
Shader Clock = 1900
Memory Clock = 2150

NOTE!:
Profile 5 is experimental!
These results may vary (greatly) from machine to machine!
If you want the best results for your card on your machine, do it the hard way and start at stock, and bench it in whatever you feel is adequate (I use 3Dmark11 and Unigine Heaven) after every increase of 10MHz. If there's artifacts or screen tearing, abort the benchmark and go up 1 notch in voltage.
I could go to 770 on the core clock before my card needed +6v.

Hope this helped you a bit.

It does but not by much. Again the extra VRAM isn't going to help the FPS like the previous video I showed by NCIX proved. However it's a bit more performance. Here are a few charts to compare.

470

470

470

Now drivers improved for Nvidia with last update so those numbers are a bit better for the 580 now. However the 7950 will also have new driver updates that will boost those specs. So it's relative.

They are almost on par with the 7950 at a bit more performance on a single 1920x1200 resolution monitor or less.

Ask yourself if you want to leave the door open for option do think you might want to expand on having multiple monitors down the road then go AMD.

Ask yourself if you want to leave the door open for option of a single 3D Vision monitor then definitively go Nvidia.

If your doing neither then your answer is for a bit more performance the 7950. Personally after many years with AMD I prefer Nvidia for less driver issues as I've discovered this year being with Nvidia for my first year. Not one issue but then again that doesn't mean it's across the board more than I've been luckier because people will tell you their own experience.

Right now EVGA GTX 580 1.5GB for $449.99 after MIR free shipping.

Right now Sapphire Radeon 7950 3.0GB for $449.99 with free shipping.

Ball is in your court. Ultimately it's your decision.

Thanks +rep. I'm going for the 580 cause the drivers over in the red zone are iffy. Unless there better?
