windows defender should be able to detect this type of nonsense software.
accessories/system tools/disk defragmenter optimizes hard disk drives just fine.

windows defrag is all you need...

I used to do tech support for wireless routers.......... people would say things like "why would I need to plug in the power cord? it's supposed to be wireLESS"

Windows does NOT do any defragging of it's own, in fact, the built in defrag has always been a piece of crap.

Now, I'm sure there is scam HD util programs, like their are scam of everything programs. But that doesn't change you need to defrag your harddrive to keep it running quick, mainly if you happen to move a lot of data around on your harddrive.

And all you that think the windows defrag is good enough, lol. Try Smart Defrag (free, works great). Not only 100% better then the built in windows, you can pick the type of defrags you want, and it runs in the background. Granted I haven't used Windows Defrag since XP, but seeing as this is MS, I doubt they actually made it more then the basic crappy program it was then.

SSDs don't need defragging because they don't have the traditional 'seek time' caused by moving the heads from cylinder to cylinder (= track on platter). SSDs are writable ROM chips and cells are adressed like regular memory, no moving parts involved.

Defragging SSDs in fact is a BAD thing because it causes unnecessary wear and tear of the memory cells without getting any sort of performance increase.

modern hard drives are so fast now that they really don't need defragging tbh. Also Vista and Win7 defrags your HDD whilst idle. You only need to defrag only if you have very large files, such as for video editing (I have a 2GB file if uncompressed expands to 110-120GB for example). Money is better spent on more RAM tbh.

Actually, people get ripped off by Mechanics all the time.

People are naive, but not always out of ignorance or being a newbie - but quite often, because they don't want to learn - they just want to click on everything and exercise no judgement whatsoever. If everyone had some amount of skill, then we wouldn't need IT (or at least they could concentrate on running network cables to a computer in under three months).

People rely on Windows Defender - therefore they get viruses. WD is poo, just like all computer products that have words like "defender", "protector", "genius", "smart", etc.

The built in defragger is well, servicable, but not very good. I can use it to defrag the drive, then I can run another defragger and it defrags. The Windows one is bad because it refuses to move some kinds of files - files that are easily moved by other products. That said, there are a lot of scam software offerings, not only with Defraggers, but even at the dizzying array of products that purport to convert AutoCAD drawings to PDF - and I mean a lot. They seem to be big into that in Central Asia, Nigeria, and other hotbeds of software development.

SSDs don't need defragging as spreading data over different channels/NAND increases performance. Defragging is a BAD thing for SSDs as you increase write amplication, bypass wear-leveling, and decreasing performance.

Windows Vista onward has performed automatic defragging.

What's the real-world benefit of defragging anyways?

Personally, defragging is one of those things that works good enough now that I don't want to remember to do it nor worry about. The gain is so minute that I don't want to waste my time.
