Win 7 network with XP involved

I think we all know that the really great "homegroup" option in Win 7 only works when all the computers in the homegroup are using Win 7. I setup a home network with a Win 7 PC and an XP PC and discovered I really needed to do some practice with my file sharing permission skills (in paticular sharing the "program files" folder on the XP machine). There is alot on the net about the "ins and outs" about making a network between Win 7 and XP and file sharing permissions and this allowed me to be sucessfull. My question is, can I do all the lab work I want in this area using virtuial machines? I want to use virtuial machines in case I mess up and I can start over easier. The way I am doing labs now is with two seperate machines, one with Win 7 and one with XP and playing around with the different file sharing techniques, will this way give me the best experience?

I decided to stick with the individual machines for my "labs" to get better with my file sharing and Win 7 XP networks. One site I visited had the opinion that requests from customers to include an XP machine to either their home or business network is a very common request. I get "extra inspired" when I study (and do actual hands on type work) when the job I am attempting to learn is actually one I will see in a "job" type setting. I am not lucky enough or blessed with that ability that some have to either read or do something once and have it down pat. I am blessed with an energy level that pushes me to practice as long as it takes for me to be able to do things fast and right the first time (and not only this Win 7 XP network thing).
