Gigabyte ma790fx-ds5 died

Thread Starter
Hi all hope someone can shed a bit of light on this situation i have

Recently got a call from a mate who has this gigabyte MA790FX-DS5 board and he said he had bios crash and it reset itself on him then the machine restarted and would not post (the fans run then slow down for a milisecond then cary on then slow down again for a milisecond etc) and shows NO MONITOR activaty. The psu died on him at this time so he replaced that but it still does the same thing (checked old psu with a tester and trust me ITS DEAD lol)

I have a feeling his main bios is corrupt as i have checked cpu with another board and it is fine same for ram and graphics card!!

My quwstion is CAN I FORCE THE 2nd BIOS TO BOOT FROM withought being in the 1st bios Ie is there anyway to hard set the board to this 2nd bios>?<

Any help appreciated

cheers all and merry christmas

Bad/unstable RAM can cause this on GA mobos, test it out a stick at a time.

The part manual should describe how to do it. Or look for a switch /toggle, it should be clearly labelled.

I went through the manual and could not see anything but will look again

As for ram i thought this but no its fine it has been tested on another board and it is fine although i know he has always had ram issues with this board

The PSU death could've taken out the motherboard with it... it's common for PSU deaths to take away other parts as well sadly.

thats my fear to the the PSU killed the board BUT gigabyte want me to remember where we got it and i cant boo unlike asus etc they say go back to the retailer and as i say i can not remember who they were as i bought stuff from ALOT of suppliers like overclockers.co.uk and dabs scan microdirect etc etc (I built it for him 2 years ago.)

right well i put a athlon duel core on the board and it booted but bios was F2 so i then downloaded new bios and Q flashed it on then its all working again WAHHHAY

"UPDATE" well the new PSU died just now it was working ok had the system running then it shut down and would not power on anymore so i tested the new psu and it to has died so my next question is "CAN A MOTHERBOARD BLOW A PSU" can it cause it to fail

Bear in mind i have chesked it ISNT shorting and the stand offs are in place properly i had 1 cd drive 1 hard drive a amd duel core 3600 cpu and the motherboards 24pin and 8 pin connected

It is only a week old and am taking it back tomorrow for replacment but am a bit worried about getting a new one then to have that DIE on me as well !!

The psu by the way is a iCute 700w with 28amp rails
this one to be precise http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...rderCode=A63HG

Going to a dual core gave you some life. That means the psu is too weak. 28a is very low .. minimum should be 40a..
Thread Starter
+3.3v = 28A, +5v = 28A +12v = 20A, +12v = 20A, -12v =0.8A amd +5 = 2A

these are the voltages of the psu and it is built to run 2 8pin or 2 6pin graphics cards and has 2 rails so this is good enough isnt is ?

running a Gigabyte MA790FX-DS5 and a phenom x4 cpu )running a dual core athlon at the mo as stated as to get mobo running) 2 sticks of balistix 1066 ram and 2 sata drives and a 4870 graphics with 512 ram

700w peak

I would go with at least 30a on the first 12v rail and/ or a minimum of 55a combined.
Phenom I ?
