35v vs. 25v capacitors

I'm trying to repair a video distribution amplifier with two popped caps, but I'm pretty new with this so bear with me redface.gif
I desoldered the caps from the board, and I need a 470 microfarad, 25v capacitor, but I can only find 470uf 35v capacitors at the shack. From my understanding, the voltage is only the upper limit of power that can go through it, so whether it's 25v or 35v, as long as it's higher than 25v, it shouldn't matter correct?

Also, how does one figure out what the inductance of an unmarked inductor is? And does anyone know where I might be able to buy bigger caps (400v, 68uf)?

Thanks!

PS: Spent 10 minutes trying to figure out where to put this, please move it if it should be in a more appropriate section.

the voltage is just the max it can take before frying. be within its tolerance and you're fine. just be careful and realize whether is a polarized cap (HUGE difference).

also, in order to help you search for parts we would need to know if it's surface mount or through hole, what material, etc. check http://www.mouser.com/ to get started.

Alright, thanks!

I believe it's through hole, as in, there is a hole going through the PCB, and I unsoldered it from the bottom.

haha yes that's through hole. for 65uF you would need either a tantalum or electrolytic cap (go with electrolytic) as they are the only ones that reach that capacitance range. i'm also assuming you'd want a radial cap and not an axial one (leads out of bottom vs either side).

narrowed it down a bit for you smile.gif

Wow man thanks for all this! Great help!
Only bummer is that shipping'll probably cost 10 times what the caps cost, oh well tongue.gif
