Clarifying TRIM on AMD? How?

Thread Starter
So I'm doing a build for a friend and we went for a Mushkin Sandforce SSD and his motherboard is an ASUS 880G/SB710 board.

Shortly after it arrived, I remembered reading something about AMD and TRIM support.

So essentially. How EXACTLY do you go about getting flawless, or close to flawless TRIM support? What method is ideal for best performance? I've heard MS ACHI drivers and I've also heard of the AMD Storage drivers...

I'm confused.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm not sure about the AMD drivers, last I checked it was MS AHCI for trim on AMD, I have the SB710 on an ASUS board and that's what I'm running. However I just benched my Intel X25-v after not bothering since I installed it months ago and its down to 216 from 270 in AS-SSD Benchmark, could just be because I've filled it up though.

i didn't think your proc had anything to do with trim.. i always thought it was just windows related and you had a controller that supported it

They're talking about the storage drivers for the motherboard and which chipset they use, not cpu.

Yep, you plug it in and the windows drivers work. On an Intel southbribge Intel's drivers support trim and are usually better than the windows ones, I'm just not sure AMD's drivers for their southbridge support trim yet.

I would personally use drivers from intel...
windows has video drivers right? but we use amd/nvidia drivers for a reason...there more tweaked for that product.

I mean. If it's possible, I would. But something tells me Intel is too smart to allow that to happen.

But the question of most cocern is whether the MS ACHI driver is fully compatible with TRIM. I heard a couple months back that the Microsoft driver could only TRIM 4GB...

It has probably changed, but I am not sure...

Thanks to all again.

Intel drivers only work for Intel Hardware

Wow only TRIM 4GB... at a time?
Do you have a source for that?

Anyway msahci.sys does support TRIM, and it also support AMD Southbridges... however the performance might not be 100% optimized compared to AMD's own driver.

There are rumors and benchmarks showing AMD has TRIM support on their 10.11 or later drivers, but as usual AMD says nothing, doesn't have any changelogs, and never answers any questions, so no one knows, or perhaps will ever know OFFCIALLY if AMD's driver supports TRIM. mad.gif

That said, with a Sandforce drive, TRIM is not as significant, so if it were me, I would probably try out the latest AMD drivers.

Yeah this is where I saw it...which made me piss myself thinking that my friend has just wasted $100...Is any of this true? I don't quite understand it. Maybe I read it wrong.

And thanks by the way.
