Must be a different warranty policy for the States then.

Secondhand bodies are awesome. You won't get the best in noise performance, but their lower cost enables you to spend on lenses, which are (according to most) more important than the body.
You can also get a more sturdy body with more buttons/better ergonomics if you buy secondhand.
No matter how awesome the D3100 is, I won't buy one because I have one of these: http://home.zonnet.nl/famwakker/phot...srev1large.jpg
Cost me 450 euros when I bought it secondhand, wouldn't trade it for the world.

Im surprised no one recommended the Pentax k-x?

I don't have it but from all the googling i did, a lot of people would pick the Pentax k-x over any of the recommended so far and plus you can pick up the k-x with kit lens and 50-200mm for only $550 on amazon or b&h

Apparntly its amazing for its price and very well reviewed

Except in terms of expandability, the lens/accessories market is lacking compared to Canikon.

For photographers who'd want to stick with a basic DSLR, the K-x would be a good choice. However, if you've upgrading to better bodies/lenses in mind, Canikon would be a better choice.

Yes very true..........it's still a steal though for $560 amazon shipped and kit lens + 50-200mm lens and it works with every pentax lense ever created.

But yea, canikon def win in the lense availability department. Still, i don't think most ppl even spend that much on lenses except for a good few/more extreme photagraphers.

Get an older model Nikon or Canon (you can find them new) and then buy good lens. All those new features as not as important for a beginner as good lens, IMO
