I highly recommend you leave OCP enabled since you have a reference 570.

The stuttering you mentioned could have been cause by the clock modulation.

Thanks for the info! What does OCP limit my voltage to? I want to know when I'm wasting time trying to give it more power. Also, is there a way to tell when OCP lowers my clocks?
I don't think the stuttering in Furmark is because of the OCP though because it stuttered when I ran it with the stock clocks and voltage.

In an hour of OCCT, how many errors should I allow before I decide it's unstable?

I'm also still looking for feedback on the performance of my card at stock clocks (732/1900 0.975v):
3DMark 11
Heaven

Is it slower than it should be?

OCP(Over Current Protection) doesn't limit your voltage, but instead it limits the amount of power the GPU can consume.

According to the GTX580 review:

Quote:
From my own testing I can confirm that the limiter only engaged in Furmark and OCCT and not in other games I tested. I am still concerned that with heavy overclocking, especially on water and LN2 the limiter might engage, and reduce clocks which results in reduced performance.
Quote:
At this time the limiter is only engaged when the driver detects Furmark / OCCT, it is not enabled during normal gaming. NVIDIA also explained that this is just a work in progress with more changes to come.

I don't know what OCP does now(1 year later), but i think 1.1V should be fine. You will probably see if OCP is kicking in with high power consumption benchmarks* such as 3DMark11(*I think).

Use GPU-Z to log power consumption while running your game or benchmark of choice. From the 580 review:

Quote:
Real-time clock monitoring does not show the changed clocks, so besides the loss in performance it could be difficult to detect that state without additional testing equipment or software support.
I did some testing of this feature in Furmark and recorded card only power consumption over time.

As you can see the blue line fluctuates heavily over time which also affects clocks and performance accordingly.

OCP kicks in when it detects certain programs AFAIK, so it could have been what cause the stuttering. However, your 3DMark 11 score is kind of low so i suspect something else is more likely to be causing this.

I haven't used OCCT more that a few times because i found out online that OCP kicks in when it runs, and i confirmed this with my testing. However, i haven't tested OCCT 4.0 but i suspect OCP still kicks in. So i can't give you an answer.

I'm not familiar with Heaven benchmark scores, but your 3DMark11 score does look a bit low. Did you run it with all unnecessary programs disabled or closed(e.g. Anti Virus)? If so, then i'm not sure what you should dothinking.gif

HI! Is the MSI N570GTX a good card? I could get it for €350 or else the Asus GTX 570 Direct CU II for €380....I know that the Asus is better but is it worth the extra money?

Here is the link to the MSI card: http://www.ultramalta.com/MSI-Nvidia-Geforce-GTX570--1280-MB-GDDR5-PCI-Express-Graphics-Card-_p_454.html

It depends on how heavy you want to OC the card. I'd probably go for the Asus myself.

On another note, my 570 doesn't like to be OCed for some reason, as soon as I raise the clocks in Precision, and launch a 3D application it will black screen and reset itself to stock clocks. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I always get EVGA for their excellent products and customer service. I have a DS, it stays a few degrees cooler than the reference one, but didn't overclock quite as high as the reference. I know this probably is irrelavent since every chip is different though. But yeah I always go EVGA and I like it a lot.

Thanks smile.gif I thought a little about my budget and decided that I am not going to spend an extra 40EUR just for having an EVGA Cards. I checked with another seller and if I order it by tomorrow he will sell me the Gainward 1280MB GTX570 CUDA GOOD for EUR320....when compared with the MSI at EUR350 which one should I get? I like the MSI's look more and as a reference design will it overclock better?

Thanks for the Rep. Yeah I had to call Customer Service twice and they were actually nicer to me than any stranger I've ever talked to in my life, both times I had to call. They told me straight out that any overclocking will not void the warranty and the card will promptly be raplaced no-questions-asked, if the voltage was 1.1v or below. They just kept chatting with me to see if they could help me with anything else. It was insane. Totally did not expect any company to be so nice yet to-the-point, and also very knowledgeable and honest. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to get a more powerful non-reference card someday, with more power phases and a bigger/better cooler, but until I need a card overclocked higher than 30% and 25% (the reference HD overclocked to 950mhz and the DS went to 920mhz, both at 1.1v) I will gladly continue purchasing cards only from EVGA. Haven't had to RMA or call Asus or MSI customer support, but let's hope they're good as well. Best of luck with your new card modstorm.

Does OCP care about Kombustor? I used that many times as well and the only time it stuttered was in the tessellation test. Kombustor, Furmark, and OCCT are the only tests I ran in windowed mode, and therefore the only ones I could watch GPU-Z with since I don't have a second monitor (will soon! wink.gif). I didn't ever see the VDDC reach my set vcore during those benchmarks, or go very close to it either.

I'm not familiar with Heaven benchmark scores, but your 3DMark11 score does look a bit low. Did you run it with all unnecessary programs disabled or closed(e.g. Anti Virus)? If so, then I'm not sure what you should do:thinking:

The only program I had running in the background was MSI AB to manage the clocks and fan speed. I did have Avast running in the back too but I disabled all of it's shields before running the benchmark.
Are there any other benchmarks you're familiar with that I should run to see how my card scores?

I'm actually thinking that I have either a faulty motherboard (probably not) or a faulty hard drive disk (more likely). My motherboard is a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (rev2) and the HDD is a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB (WD1002FAEX), I've owned everything in this computer besides the GPU for at least 2 years and I've been having problems for almost as long.

I just recently tested the speed of my HDD and the graph showed what I can only describe as stuttering, I checked the results other people had and my average speeds were close, but their drives were far more steady than mine. As with the GPU, I can actually notice the stuttering. The computer freezes often, every time I wake it from sleep mode (changing power settings didn't fix it), freezes and slow downs during file transfers and installers, freezes when opening some programs (mostly with Firefox), exceptionally long loading times in some games. Every component in my system is supposed to be fast, but there's a serious bottleneck somewhere, which I suspect to be my HDD. My other computer, which is far less powerful than this one, hasn't had any of these problems and has performed exactly as intended since I bought it. In fact, when I moved my Radeon HD 5850 from this i7 to the AMD (less powerful computer) the 5850 actually performed better than it did in the i7.

To make it even worse, for more than a year I have had various programs and drivers suddenly become corrupt and stop working properly. I've been able to fix them with reinstalls and a few other tricks. The only bad install I've been stuck with is Windows 7 its self. When service pack 1 was released I found out that my OS was corrupt, it refused to install due to some error with WIndows files, I tried all kinds of solutions but eventually determined that the only way to fix it would be to reinstall or repair Windows with the disk. I haven't fixed it since I was already planning to build a new computer with Ivy Bridge and just didn't want to deal with it.

I feel pretty stupid for not piecing this together until now, but all these problems seem to be related.
I apologize for veering off the topic of the thread, if there's somewhere else you think I should post this info let me know.

Unfortunately I don't have another hard drive around that I could use to test this, so this all is just speculation. I don't need to fix this since I'm swapping out everything but my GPU, PSU, and case as soon as IB is released, but it would sure be great if I could solve this.

Thanks for all the help you've given me! Didn't fix anything yet, but I know a lot more about my 570 now. smile.gif
