Will these charge my PS3 controller?

Thread Starter
Ok I have two USB chargers here.

1. Is from a Motorola Razr wall charger (spn5185b)
Input is: 0.15A
Output: 5.0v 550mA

2. Is a Griffin Powerblock (GFP051-0510-1)
Input: 0.2A
Output: 5.0v 1000mA

Which would be the best option if any, to charge my PS3 controller?

According to Wikipedia, USB specs are:
Electrical 5 volt DC
Max. voltage 5 volts
Max. current 500-900 mA @ 5 V (depending on version)So then this powerbrick should be perfect at giving me the quickest charge possible then?

I personally don't know about those chargers in question, but if you have a digital cable box with a usb output slot, it's quite possible that you'll be able to charge your controller through that.

Yeah tried, for some reason it wont charge on mine. xbox 360 works so far, but in theory this wall charger should work.

I just tried to charge one of my PS3 controllers with my Blackberry charger....no dice. No blinking lights what so ever and it's rated higher than the Motorola Razor charger.

Blackberry
5vdc 0.7a or 700mA

edit: If i'm not mistaken, I think it's not just about the current, but a specific signal the controller needs to recognize. Not to say it needs data, but it needs more than current flowing through the negative/positive pins that activate the ps3 controller into charge mode. Like all 4 pins in use rather than the two negative/positive pins of the mini usb plug. I just hooked it up to my portable power pack that supplies 5vdc at 1.5 amps...more than enough needed to charge the controller, still nothing.

The controller does not blink while charging when you connect it to anything other than the ps3 to charge. However, some devices actually do not charge it.

Xbox 360 = no blinking lights but charges
My cable box= no blinking lights but does not charge it

The only way you can find out is by leaving it plugged in for about an hour and checking the battery level.

This thread is what got me thinking:

Interesting, seems to be a lot of conflicting experiences going on in that thread though....

One thing that I don't think is being considered and I myself am not sure either.....

But, if it were at all possible for the controller to accept some form of charge while the status lights are not on.............would it be safe to assume that voltage protection is not working correctly? Li-ions are not batteries that I would want to play around with and cause a rupture in the cell walls from overcharging. I've had non PCB 18650 li-ion battery blow up in my work station before, and it scared the beejeezus out of me... fortunately it was just a big bang following a spark.

Also, again...if the controller is being charged improperly, it's quite possible to cause ill affects such as digital memory. Normally not permanent, but a beyatch to correct. I'd just charge it through my PC port to be safe or a proprietary charging dock.

Again, I'm not certain of these things...but I am certain that the battery itself doesn't have a PCB built into it, so it does rely on the controllers circuitry to shut off charging...the question is,...is the status lights turning on signify that the pcb is functioning properly during a charge?.

just use a regular usb to mini usb cord into any usb slot on a computer or wall usb slot.

Rocker: Too easy and not always on, I dont want to have to leave on ps3 or pc to charge.

dedmonwakin:
That's a very good point and something to really take into consideration. Though most phone chargers do have that PCB with those safety precautions inside the blocks, right?

I think they may.

Whatever, I just broke down and bought this on Amazon for $17 biggrin.gif: http://www.dreamgear.net/shop-by-type/chargers-and-docks/quad-dock-pro-for-ps3-move.html

Oooh, nice. That charging dock would like nice along side my ps3's.

While it's a dead subject now,....nope. Phone chargers don't have protection boards in them that recognizes whether the battery has reached peak charge or low amperage (unless it's a smart charger.) Phones have internal PCB's which is why the phone status lights or battery charge symbol comes on whether the phone is off or not. Just as most phones will stop charging or trickle charge, if you charged it directly through the PC usb port.

Anyhow, nice find. Off to order myself a couple! wink.gif

Yeah right for $17 you really cannot go wrong, this is one of the only controller docking stations that are self powered with an actual ac adapter. And it has two extra USB ports and claims it can handle 6 devices charging at the same time!

/Win

Also, that's good to know about the phone chargers, I actually tried both and they did not work anyway, that's what made me buy this docking station biggrin.gif
