Depends on what res monitors you'll be using. For example 3x 1440x900 monitors would likely be fine, 3x 1920x1080 or 3x 1920x1200 monitors will cause severe performance drops

EDIT:

Just saw what monitors you are wanting to run, you'll be able to play most games but likely have to lower the settings to medium or so, i would say to upgrade to 2x 6850s and then run the 3x VH232H monitors

2x6850 at stock will perform the same as my OC'ed 5850.

i think i'll just throw in another 5850 into the setup only if absolutely necessary.

1 6850 OC'd with the tool in Catalyst is enough to drive my 3-head Eyefinity at 4080x1024 with only small sacrifices in quality. e.g. cut the AA, and go to "high" instead of "very high" in some cases.

2 6850s in Xfire> 2 5850s. 1 5850 can probably run a bunch of stuff on any eyefinity setup on all low no problem, maybe most games on medium.

i see...
but i really don't want to get rid of my current 5850 for a lower-performing cfx solution. i find my 5850 a very well performing card, and plus i've only had it for 2 months.

i think i'll just run 5760x1080 at medium settings to compensate. thanks for the responses.

hold up--
you are saying:
2x 6850 crossfire outperforms 2x 5850 crossfire?

this is untrue. the 5000 outperforms the 6000 series. reason being is because amd reworked the product lineup numbering system.

?=6850
5850=6870
5870=6970
5970=6990

6000 series cards in CrossFire scale better for the dollar than the 5000s. Thus 6850s in CF keep up if not pass the 5850s in CF:

apologies for my wrong information.

if i am correct--a single 5850 outperforms a single 6850?

EDIT:
also how is the cfx scaling for the 5000 series?

Terrible. 6850 owns 5850 in Crossfire, replacement doesn't mean it does the same stuff, it just means in the next gen we'll treat the 6870 like the 5770 now. The 6870 is MUCH better than the 5770, and the 6850 in CF is much better than 5850s in CF.
