If I was you,I would get a Q9550 and OC it to 4.0+ and a nice sound card and run with it for a year or so.That way you can see how everything turns out. I'm doing just that.The amount of usable power increase is marginal. Or unless you just want to upgrade

He could buy a Q9550/Q9650, but he also wants to get rid of as much older hardware as possible, by the sounds of it.
