AS5 question

Thread Starter
So I apparently got the V8 for Christmas (guess i wont be water cooling soon then). Me being who i am opened the box and noticed two particular things.

1) there s a square cardboard randomly on the side I don't know what that's for (guessing it was supposed to go on the bottom contact of the heatsink but not important i guess)

and

2) it comes with it's own Thermal compound. no names or anything just a white tube

what i want to know is; Is it any good?
or should i use AS5?
Also I have an AS5 in my Mobo box from like a year ago, It has the cap on, is it still good for use?

its not like there's an expiration on that thing right!?

while i'm at it: It is a good idea to warm my computer before removing the old heat sink right?

Some thermal compound is hard to get off. Just run you some prime95 and take it off and clean the cpu with some isoprophy alcohol and do the heatsink also.

You should be fine, there is no need to warm up the computer.

Killer you read my mind on the next part. jsut one thing, reading the guide I'm guessing ":tinting refers to the process of adding and spreading the heatsink, I would've thought "tinting the CPU and heatsink would be too much? or am I wrong about the meaning of tinting?

As most heatsinks aren't perfectly flat and have imperfections in it. You take the artic silver 5 and put it on the heat sink and more or less fill in the voids. I just work it in with a small amount. Some will wipe off the extra also to make it look the best. Just covering up the nicks, etc is all you are doing.

I too have the CM v8. I at first had used the included TIM. On stock clock speeds I was easily hitting 90c load under prime95. I had first thought that the heatsink was tightened enough so I redid the screws on the back with no change. I finally took the v8 off, cleaned off the included tim and used arctic silver's tim instead. Now my temps are around 75c under full load @ 1.35v on my i7.
