I think SC are as good as the stock, but not better. As stated above these GPU's are not binned and it is simply luck of the draw. If you are not in any hurry the SOC and the Lightning products use upgraded power solutions and PCB's that alow for higher clocks and are better able to handle higher voltages.

That being said they are still luck of the draw as far as the GPU is concerned.

Binning just does not happen even on the super high end cards

Right now I kinda like the Giga 480 SOC for $ 399.99 at the egg w/free shipping

With some egva cards you need to flash bios for higher overclocks. Mine maxes out @ 850 core and 2000 memory
2nd 480 his 850 and 1940 memory
@ 884 is stable but +1 = fail.
You need a Overvolt. and overclocked twecked bios i think to get higher. My temps. Are last 12 hours folding 44degs On 2nd 480.
Sold buddy 1st 480. got 5870 and 285 back+cash. Now im watercooled.
If you overclock the card Your self (EASY) or just go with factory , whatever makes u happy. i would buy a normal and push it.

I assume most of you guys are pro nvidia, but i'm kinda in the same boat as this guy, and i need help deciding. I would like to purchase a 570 fermi but i dont have enough money.. so my question to you guys is;

470 GTX vs 6870 vs Radeon HD 6850

or really could you just recommend the best choice for under 250. PLEASE

Depends on a few things, like your PSU, your resolution and fan setup.

The 6870 is even with the GTX 470 in most cases at most resolutions, is quieter, consumes A LOT less power and is cheaper by about an average of $10.

The 470 performs better in DX11 games that use tessellation, and better at lower resolutions.

But you should fill out your system specs if you want a real answer. But I would go with the 6870 if I was you.

i can't disagree with the above post since it's all true, but personally if i was on a tight budget (like it seems you're on), i would go for the 6850. for now it's a great performer, and later on you can add another one when they're even cheaper- 6850s are (if i'm not mistaken) the best crossfire configuration available today, their performance scales almost 100% in xfire.

DEFINITELY don't go for the 470 imo, the 4xx series is very loud and runs very very hot, which are 2 factors that for me are deal breakers (if you're set on 6870/470 then go for the 6870 like the above post said)

kkay, thx templar and Witchdoctor, I thought that since the SC has a default higher core clock, once OC'ed, its maximum core clock would be higher than the original's. But guess not. Btw, could you explain to me what binned GPUs are, witchdoctor? Cuz everytime u mention that in ur posts, I dont understand shiz. lol

Binning is the process of sorting specific GPUs based on their VID and other specifications.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_binning

If the GPUs sent to EVGA were binned, the superclocked versions would supposedly have a lower VID (a lower stock voltage required to getting the same clock frequency as stock)- and therefore be able to overclock higher due to requiring less voltage (less heat) to achieve the same overclock as other cards.

Binning applies to CPUs as well, it's how Intel and AMD sort which CPUs become which- an i7 930 vs an i7 950 for example.

Thx Kittens!

Btw, for those of you still being a brainer about 570 and 6970, unless you have a 2560 x 1600 screen resolution (which is very unlikely), - GTX 570 IS THE ANSWER -
Better overall performance, runs quieter, cheaper, overall better in most games than 6970!

I think it's a toss up, tbh. They both perform very close to one another but higher resolutions seem to give way to the 6970. If you plan on gaming above 1920x1080 (or with a multi-display setup), then you should probably look into the 6970 for it's 2GB of VRAM.

Just my $0.02!

I have a question..

When it comes to downsampling older games like Mass Effect 2

3840 x 2160 and 4x AA.. will the 6970's 2GB outshine the GTX 570?

How about if I do that in Crysis w/ Texture Mods?

3840 x 2160 and 8x AA?

Will the 6970 beat it? Or RAM isn't that important in added textures, amount of AA and in downsampling?
