I wouldn't use anything more than a gtx460 (or 5850 on ATI side) on a 500w PSU especially since you already are running an I7 950 off of it.

is the fastest 460 better than the fastest 5850?

Been drooling over the GTX570 until I saw how noisy it was and how much power it uses. Considering your screen is only 1440x900 and you have a 500w PSU I'd say a GTX460, Radeon 6850 or 6870 would be a good choice. I think this talk of bad drivers for ATI cards maybe a bit blown out of proportion. I've just had an Nvidia for the past 4 years and now I've got an ATI 6870, all my classic and new games run perfectly with the 10.10 drivers.

A suggestion, if you want to build a balanced gaming system get a screen and video card that are a good match for your CPU, high-end. You may need a slightly higher PSU for the high-end Nvidia cards.

Antec.com has a very useful PSU calculator which tells you what you need.

Not sure were you have been looking, but, before I got my GTX 570 I had a reference 5870 which was hotter and louder then my new 570. GTX 570 is cool, and very quiet.

Just read a few reviews on the GTX570. If you're happy with the noise level good for you. I think my 6870 is a bit noisy under full load.

My opinion on the 570 is that it's probably slightly noisier than I'd like, but that's just 1 persons opinion. It's an exceptional card in terms of performance no doubt.
