Steam doesn't connect error

Thread Starter
I get this "error connecting to steam network" when i start steam. Firewall is off, router firewall is off. ISP doesn't block steam.

I can install steam in a W7 x86 VM and it works fine. So either x64 or this windows install has something different that is preventing steam from working correctly.

I tried uninstalling(and deleting all traces of steam) and installing. No luck. Any ideas?

ok i fixed it. i ended up copying c:/program files/steam from the virtual machine it was working on to my c:/program files(x86)/steam folder on my host x64 install and it actually worked!

now how is some noob supposed to figure that out? steam is a nightmare

Steam normally isn't this difficult, but sometimes it has issues.
