Getting 950 OC to 5.0+GHz

Thread Starter
Used to be "Tweaking 950 OC." Just trying to get to 5.0+GHz stable now. Page 2 has more info. If you have any input, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

Well, after reading for about 3 days, and testing settings for another 2, I finally decided to come here for some advice. Let me start off by saying that I'm not well versed in OC terminology, and my mobo seems to be more cryptic than most. However, I've managed to follow some of the guides here and plug in a few numbers where they ought to be. Still, I'm not happy with my results. The adjustments are as follows:

CPU Ratio - x24
BCLK freq - 158
PCIE freq - 100
DRAM freq - Auto
UCLK - set to 3200 but it changes itself (even with all main options set to manual)
QPI - minimum, @ 5558MT/s
CPU voltage - 1.3652
CPU PLL - 1.88
QPI/DRAM core voltage - 1.35
IOH voltage - 1.28
ICH voltage - 1.20
DRAM Bus voltage - 1.65

Ram timing is 8-8-8-24
LLC is on
CPU/PCIE spread spectrum is off
EIST is off
C1E is off
HT is on
Appears CPU is @ 3.79GHz

I was told to run 2 instances of Prime95 when HT is on, and when doing so, my max temp is 78C, as reported by Real Temp. One instance and I don't break 72C. IBT never goes over 68C. Idle temps are around 42C.

Probably a bit much on the info, but I'd rather not miss something important. Anyway, when I try to increase any of these numbers past this, I seem to freeze right after opening Prime95 (not even hitting start...). I'm not sure if there are numbers I should be scaling together, but obviously I'm doing something wrong. My goal is to hit around 4.2, maybe more if I turn off HT, but with my methods, this isn't going to happen.

If anyone can help with adjustments, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help.

EDIT: I've noticed that cores 3 and 4 are about 5C cooler than cores 1 and 2. During a dual instance Prime95 burn, core 4 was actually 13C cooler than cores 1 and 2 (which stay around the same temp). Since I'm not the one who built the system (spec'd it and had it built for me), should I remove the CPU cooler and put on some Arctic Silver?

hm...

try 23 ratio with 166 blck to get to 3.8
leave all other voltages to auto to make sure nothing's else is causing instability

leave ram timings to auto too.
CPU voltage to 1.25
1.35 is pretty high and is the reason your temps are so high

but for now, try 1.25 volts to the cpu

EDIT: actually, if you have time, lower multi to 13, raise blck to 200. just to test if your mobo can do 200blck (more than likely) and test for stability.

Ok, I'm now at 3.81, with a max temp of 69C. Obviously, this was a short test, and may not be stable long term, but it is certainly better than before. At the very least, it booted and ran Prime95.

perfect

u can even lower your voltages, but people usually recommend it for 4ghz

try ocing more

honestly, 3.8 isnt your goal and briefly testing it should be fine.

now u can go higher with your bclk until satisfied. then u can tweak other voltages/timings/settings.

Well, I've reached a new limit @ BCLK 172 (3.96GHz). Anything above this results in BSODs about 3-5 mins into stress testing. At 172, I'm stable enough to run for at least 15 mins. What would be this best culprit for this? I'm happy to hang my hat up over 4.0, but seeing that 3.xx on the screen makes me want a bit more, even if the gains are small.

hmm, maybe higher voltage? bump it up higher

and as i suggested before, try lowest multiplier with 200 blck to see if your board can run it

Alright, a bit of new info to add. 200x13 worked just fine. Bench ran for about 18 mins, no problems. Sadly though, even with higher voltages, anything over 172x23 will fall apart. Surprisingly, I was able to boot up to 190x23 (4.43GHz), and really hoped that would be viable. It ran on a stress test for about 5 mins at a CPU voltage of 1.4, and then it died as well. Nothing boots over 190x23, it just gets to the "Starting Windows" screen then reboots. Not sure where to go from here. Tried readjusting DRAM Bus, PLL, IOH/ICH, all to no avail. Thanks for all of your help so far, and hopefully this will be something easy to solve.

u can try 190-195 with a multi of 21 to see if that helps alleviate this block.

Took long enough, but after a couple days of playing around, I reached stability at 192x23 (4.41GHz) and a voltage of 1.416 (couldn't go lower or it'd just crash). That's exactly what I was looking for. Prime ran all night, without any problems, and temps stayed around 76C. I might aim a bit higher, but this is exactly what I was trying to accomplish. Thanks for all of your help.

Hate to revive what I should have let die...but now that I've played around more, my temps are low enough that I'd like to aim higher. I know a 5GHz 24/7 isn't common, by any means, but I'd like to get close for my daily, if not over just for a quick validaton. However, I can't set my BCLK to 200 and over unless my multi is crazy low. I'd like to start around 213x23 (just to achieve 5.0, and know it's possible), but no amount of voltage gets me there. I'm sure this is more related to other settings, but I can't figure out which ones. I've pushed my ram all the way out to 9-9-9-24 (normally runs at 7-7-7-20, when I'm @4.4GHz CPU), however this didn't change a thing. I know I should be happy with 4.4, but what can I say, bigger is better. Any help here would be incredibly appreciated.

(And I hate to double post, but better this than create an all new thread, imo.)
