Exactly! No one looks at there screen from 0.5-1cm away, be more focused on the actual screen type and colours not a resolution were you can see the pixels from 2 inches away.

This is what AMOLED screens look like up close. Notice how the red and blue subpixels are shared? That means each pixels gets one green, half a red and half a blue. 1 + 0.5 + 0.5 / 3 = 2/3 = 66%.

See above. Black is {0,0,0}, white is {255,255,255} If you have small black text on a white background then you'll end up with something like {127,0,127} for black (which is a dark purple color) and {127,255,127} for white, which is greenish.

Your Droid uses an LCD screen without this garbage, which is why it looks fine. But text on AMOLED screens looks horrible. Its the main reason I chose my Desire over the faster Galaxy S Vibrant, since I use it a lot as an ebook reader.

See above. Yes it makes a difference. Thats not even the worst case, since the text is smoothed and enlarged.

My wife and I are currently tied to att. I checked out some samsung/android phone at their mall booth, and it sucked compared to my ip4. When I browse the web, I rarely zoom or need to zoom, even with all the small text on ocn. I went to the same site on my phone and the samsung phone, and a lot of the text was just a pixellated blur.

I'm sorry, but if someone thinks the higher resolution isn't notcable on a daily occurrence, youre lying to yourself.

And for those android fans, I'm not talking trash nor am I hyping the iPhone... I'm just saying I would give a droid a chance if there was a phone that could match the resolution. The droid x does look nice, but I am on att, so it's a no go. It seems like Att has the weakest android phones. Verizon and sprint get all the good ones.

Look, thank you for the technical details. However I own a SAMOLED Galaxy S, and the screens is awesome. My only complaint was that it had a blueish tone and this is now fixed due to Voodoo. The text on my phone looks just as good as my friends, and fathers iPhones.

Btw, you do know that most Desires have AMOLED screens right?

LG has been teasing a phone that has a higher brightness than the iphone, and the sharpness looks pretty good. I am sure that if an android phone comes out with a higher res screen it will be from LG, since they source the screen for the ip4.

Not most anymore. The Desire had AMOLED for 3 months, and has had IPS for 6 months now. All of the HTC Desires in North America are IPS, and every Desire sold worldwide since July or August is IPS.

Notice how the people saying the iPhone resolution is better are all using Samsung phones.

OCN is a pixelated blur on the Galaxy S because of AMOLED. I tried it out in store, and it was actually the deciding factor in my choice of the Desire. Like I said, 66% of the resolution it claims. I have no trouble browsing OCN on my Desire. It needs to scale slightly in portrait mode, but that is solely because the aspect ratio is thinner, not because of the resolution.

If the Android phones had the iPhone resolution, you would see silly threads going on about how great Androids are.

But when it's an iPhone, well, you can't even notice it! o_O

That said, I have seen many Android phones, and I have never seen a screen of one and thought, "wow, this looks horrible!"

They might not be as high as iPhone but they arent by any means bad.
