To all of you iPhone haters & insulters, you need to stop. The guy is simply asking when will Android be fronting a better resolution.
I am sorry, I would take 1920 x 1080p on my tiny Droid2 any day of the week.
That being said, when it comes to resolution, there is no technological substitute, even progressive resolution formats pale in comparison to hefty resolutions.
I don't think this is just a hardware thing, all though the supply for the majority of the handset touch screens seems to be much lower than the manufacturer's would like. This is also an OS thing. Because our Operating System is entirely flexible, it would have to make a front end UI that supports anything higher customized per every single handset. I have seen some of the code, and there is some optimization for variable width x height resolutions, but most of it is hard coded in with (x,y). I think they can bring out the next phone resolution tomorrow, but they must feel what we have is adequate for use not to mention it will be pricier screens they have to purchase, and software they have to develop. Then they have to have a branch of development maintaining the new gear, and old development team maintaining older gear. Or you have one development team doing everything. From a developer standpoint, I wouldn't like having to deal with so many different products with just one team.
This is where its easier for a company to have focus on ONE phone and a matching iOS to bring about radical changes. Motorola has about 7 android based handsets (which I think is stupid/silly.) You spread your forces to thin and you lose, but if you put all your eggs in one basket you face palm when it drops.
Even on my Droid2, I have never felt my resolution pixelated or even watching Archer in 720p (converted to 848x480) look anything less than perfect. I will see if I can post a screenshot from my phone for you when I get to work.
I also looked up that AMOLED information, it appears Nathris looks spot on, and I had NEVER ever heard anything like that. I actually though AMOLED was an upgrade tech to my style screen but now I wouldn't take it ever. I will take my dimmer LCD Edited by RagingCain - 12/20/10 at 6:14am
