Is it safe to buy from steam anymore with all the hacked accounts?

Thread Starter
Ive had a couple of my m8s accounts hacked. And yeah they lost access and thier games. I mean i see on their page, "this account has been hacked by prob7" im like ***. So whats goin on, is this a problem and now i read some post on here about them.

I always do buy hard copies but was getting tempted especially with some of the weekend deals they do.

Yes, it is. Steam only gets hacked because of user error. Either they got phished or they downloaded some malware that stole their password from their local machine.

Steam is only as safe as you make it to be. If you're careless with security it's not safe at all, but if you pay attention to security tips and don't give your password out like an idiot then it's very safe.

Had my account since December 26th 2004 and I have never had a problem.

Like TestE said, it's only as safe as the user. If you don't do anything stupid, it won't be taken off you.

Only issue with steam is that is you buy a game that sucks balls either due to it being made redundant (APB) or its sooo badly optimised (COD:BO) or they update and piss it up (CS:S)..... you cannot get your money back. Charge back apparently gets your steam account banned and shut down.

But user security is top notch XD
Its usually the user who causes their account to get hacked.

Nah, chances are you won't be brute forced or anything like that. People get their accounts stolen because they're foolish. Downloading a keylogger, being tricked by a fake admin, etc.

I had a random 'admin' claiming to need my log in information. I gave him fake info and laughed when he said it wasn't correct.

Oh dude steam is so secure and safe. The only people who had their accounts hacked is the ones who answered im's regarding links or they can get a free game or claimed they are steam staff members and only an idiot would fall for it leading a result having his steam account hacked.

You can always set your profile private or add only friends but make sure nobody else sees it.

Hard copies are the way to go, gotta be willing to pay extra tax when steam doesn't lol. I still like hard copies sometimes they come with neat stuff listed in the manual such as stickers or maybe a catalog order discount or posters. A original box copy is very nice to see on your shelf too instead of digital sometimes. Just both ways are good.

Just like the above posts say, Steam is VERY secure, the only way you are going to get hacked is if you download some third party keylogger, malware or some other type of backdoor trojan that can monitor your PC. As long as you make sure you know the sites you are going to are safe, the downloads you download are legit, and your password is a little more complicated than "weak" on the scale you will be perfectly fine. =) If you are still weary, I would suggest changing your password to having AT LEAST one uppercase, one numerical character, one symbol(%, -, #, etc...) and some lowercase letters as well. Also having it longer than 9 character helps keep it more secure as well, just make sure YOU don't forget what it is.
