HD Radeon 5700 memory question

Hey guys, I recently got a 5700 via RMA. It's 1GB DDR5, but I wanted some advice because I heard from someone that my 2gb ram(which is all I have) does not allow my card to run at its fuil potential as my card uses some of my system ram.
Can I get any clarification on this, I'm running Windows XP Pro sp3 32 bit.
I'm thinking of switching to vista, and buying 4gb's of ram since XP only supports about 3.5.

I wanna make sure my Graphics card is running at it's full potential stock wise.

All help is appreciated

The card will only use the RAM is has on it.

So having 4GB instead of 2GB wont affect the performance of the graphics card?
