I think she melted.

Yesterday I was just playing on my computer and I guess the top fan stopped spinning (the big one in the antec900... think its a 220?)

Anywhom I noticed it after my comp shut off (thank god amd), cpu temps were reading at almost breaking point.

Well I waited until the cpu cooled down/heatsink too. fired her back up and it was on for like 5~ seconds or so. I then smelt burning plastic. So I paniced thinking that the board caught on fire or the top fan had a short (was working fine.)

I quickly put my head in the case and started to smell looking for the smell. I found it leading back to my power supply.

Was a bit happy once I noticed it being the power supply. So time went on through the day and I figured I would take the psu apart and plug it in (to see if it was sparking. Nothing, no smell or anything. Yet, if you put your ear around a foot or so away from it you can here a buzzing. Which I'm pretty sure is the sound of the power looping back. I just hope my board didn't burn out if it did short or if the smell was actually my board.

I'm scared to buy a new powersupply because if it isn't that and it's the board I will be out of the money to buy a new board. Currently jobless so that would set me off my computer for quiet a while.

Also I'm going to college soon so I'll need a PC. Soon as in like 3 weeks.

Honestly I believe it's the psu (never had any thing burn itself out on me ever, 4 years of building) The psu was a generic that came in a $20 case. An ultra 350w dual rail.

So I'm almost positive that peice of s&@* burnt out... but I need advise from more experienced people in this department.

fill out your specs here http://www.overclock.net/specs.php?do=addsystem

Yes, I'm sure it's the power supply as well. Hopefully it didn't kill your motherboard and other components. Search your motherboard for burn marks just to see if it's alright.

For a powersupply, I recommend the reliable antec basiq http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-003-_-Product

Was going to get a Rosewill Green series bronze 80.

530w.

I searched the board prior to opening the psu forgot to mention that. Maybe I cant take a few pics of it. Ram had no burns, none on the gfx card, none on my network card. Checked the cpu (I don't know if it burns that up though??) pins were shiny and clean.

Also the board is a ECS Black series (It's black...) so Idk if it'd be easy or hard to spot burns I searched for a good 5mins.

sounds like the PSU alright, ask around your family/friends if someone has a psu for you to test in your rig to see if it'll run.

you could get a flash light and try to search for any. Look around the mosfets.

Roswill psus are alright, but I find an antec more reliable

oh sorry about that

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageG...%20Motherboard

to the left of the cpu. In that area I'd search for some burn marks

Don't really see any, I did this under a floodlight my step-dad had plugged up working on a car in the dark. (VERY VERY VERY VERY Bright) so I don't think it shot the board. (I will ofcourse post here with my result after I buy the new heatsink)

On the other hand I've see on the internet "Mosfet Heatsinks" now... what is the point in that? Mine never got hot (I just now realized what these are thought they were like the chips on the board.)

occasionally they can get hot to touch and burn. If that's not the problem then it's definitely the power supply
