Great phone. Awesome hardware, but for software, you won't want to use stock roms. 2.1 only, custom roms are pretty much all 2.2 and 2.3 is already booting, though only barebones.

rephrase?
i'm pretty new to the smarthphone side of stuff right now

the seller who's phone I have an eye on says the galaxy S which i'm bidding on is using 2.2

Sorry. Most Galaxy S phones still use Android 2.1. Some got an official 2.2 update, but not many. Most have 2.2 hacked on. Basically, that is what I was saying. The hardware on the Galaxy S is great, but the stock rom is very lackluster at 2.1 when android 2.3 was just released. My suggestion is to flash a 2.2 rom, and I'm assuming that's what this person did. However, there is the small chance he got an official update.

My comment about 2.3 was that 2.3 has been booting on the Galaxy S, but pretty much everything wireless does not work, so it's proof of concept. Should be working so.

tl;dr If you want to be flashing your own roms, SGS is awesome. If you want to not deal with it, well, it's less awesome.
