My daughters first computer

Thread Starter
So after building my first system a couple months ago, I have decided to build one for my 11 year old daughter. She is really into games (wii and ds) and music, so I thought it was time for her to get into pcs.

Here is her build. Keep in mind, this is an extreme budget build.

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103903 $40 (on craigslist) Using the stock fan from my x3 (its a little bigger heatsink)
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-203-_-Product $24.99 from Geeks
Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-455-_-Product $22.99 (only one stick to start with)
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138180 $38 from Geeks
HDD: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...40AS-R&cat=HDD $34.99 from Geeks
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817170010 $0 Leftover from my first build (yes I know its cheap, but so is my budget) already tested, works fine.
Fans: 2x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-015-_-Product $9.99 ea = $19.98
Optical drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827118039 $14.99 on sale at newegg
Case modding supplies: I can of testors tangerine orange pearl paint $3.49. I can of duplicolor black engine paint satin (I already have this)

Total = $199.44

I have wrapped each part individually and on christmas day we will open it together and start modding the case. She is really into art and anime, so we are going to tape off the clear panel so that she can draw whatever she wants and I will xacto it out and sand it with 1000 grit so that the orange leds in the case light up her drawing. Also going to remove the stock blue trim for the front and paint it with the tangerine paint. (her favorite color is orange). Interior of the case will be painted satin black. Also picked up some sleeving from Manyak here on ocn for my system and it has orange sleeving in it and I will use that to sleeve whatever cables we cant hide. Will paint psu and various items inside tangerine as well. Should be fun.

The whole modding idea is great! Good Christmas present

My only suggestions would be to perhaps spend the extra 40 bucks for an X4, and depending on which OS you'll be loading on it, an extra gig or two of RAM. If it's XP though, 2GB should be fine for now.

You're a great dad I nominate you for BAMF of the week

And dude, I'm stealing that build for my cousin's birthday he keeps whining that "his computer sucks" so i'll build him one lol

Yup, going with WinXP, so the 2 gig will work. Plan to add another stick of 2gig ram a little later (especially if she decides she likes gaming on it). The x2 250 was just too good of a deal to pass up. My goal with the build was under $200 and an x4 just pushed me too far past.

Nice. Sounds like a fun little project.

My daughter (8 yrs old) and I just put her a computer together from from parts I had laying around. AM2 BE-2400 ($25 new), Cheap MSI board (has 6150 onboard graphics, free with a combo), 2 gigs RAM ($10), Antec PSU ($9), 80 gig HDD (Free), DVD Drive (free) and a TV tuner ($30) all in an Antec 300 case (free). She likes helping me with builds, and has been doing it with me for about 2 years. She probably knows more about computer hardware than most adults.

I told her we will work on her case this summer when she is out of school (she wants a pink, red and purple case).

Post up some pics of the mods.

What are you using for the GPU?

Or are you just sticking with onboard for now?

Sticking with onboard for now, but will probably add a better GPU down the road. All depends on if she gets into any games. For now, the onboard will be fine for internet and such.
