R3E i7 950 OC Help

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
I just finished my build and got windows 7 installed and am now wanting to OC the 950. I have the latest BIOS update but since i am new to OCing im unsure what settings do what and what settings i need to pay attention to when OCing. I am wanting to get the system to 4 GHz on air.

My system is:

Mobo: R3E
CPU: i7 950 stock idle @ 39C
CPU Cooler: Spire Thermax Eclipse II
Ram: 3 x 4GB Corsair Dominator GT's
HDD: 3 x Vertex 2's in RAID 0
GPU: 2 x EVGA GTX 480 SC
Case: Antec DF-85 with all fans replaced
PSU: Corsair AX1200

If anyone could help that would be awesome. As i said, im new to OCing so any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

~Hyper

try 1.2250 cpu voltage with 1.2250 qpi/dram if it boots, run intelburntest, if it fails in any of this steps increase the cpu voltage by a notch. you can leave every other voltage setting on auto.

oh btw, disable power saving features and spectrums.

Does the CPU GHz adjust automatically with the CPU voltage? Also, will i need to loosen any ram timings or is that only needed for higher OCs?

no, you have to increase the base clock /BCLK to achieve higher speeds.

on a 950 your speed will be : 23xBCLK. default is 133. here is a guide for you, should cover everything you need.

ok, that article was very helpful.

I ran IntelBurnTest at Max on my stock speed and the temps never raised above 55 C with a base voltage of 1.091V, which is good.

This is where I ran into a problem...

I pushed the Base Clock to 150, multiplyer is x23, left all others at auto, upon save and reboot it hangs on a black screen. i end up force restarting and then i get the message that the OC failed.

I thought maybe it needed more voltage so i pushed 1.15V to the CPU Voltage, Clock at 150 and still the same thing happens.

This shouldnt be causing any issues, am i missing something?

Also post your bios settings so that we may help you further, please.
i set the ram timings to the 9-10-9-27 as thats what they are rated to run at (although i also left them at auto for the first few times). I then enabled manual CPU OC, and set the Base Clock to 150 from 133. Everything else was left as is or in the "Auto" mode.

Once the black screen happened, i went back in and bumped the voltage up to 1.15 form 1.091 and it did the same thing.

As i said, those are the only 2 settings I have adjusted, aside from the ram.

Did you follow the first guide posted? It would have told you which manual values you needed to set and how to determine your highest stable bclk. Overclocking is a slow and precise process. You have to do it in small steps so that you know what values you need to increase and or decrease for stability. That guide is there to help you learn. Load back to default values and drop your cpu multiplier to a low value. The guide suggests x15. Set your bclk to 133. There's no manual RAM multiplier for the R3E so set your RAM frequency to the lowest value available. Set your uclk frequency to 2x your RAM frequency and adjust your QPI Data Rate to the lowest setting aside from Slow Mode. Set your Vcore to the default, likely 1.2v, then switch your QPI/DRAM to 1.2v as well. As you increase your bclk, QPI/DRAM will need to be increased for stability. And since you're running 2 GPUs set your IOH core to 1.15 and load in your default RAM timings and mode. Save and restart. Load into windows and run OCCT or IBT or LinX for 3 runs on maximum. If the test fails increase your QPI/DRAM a notch. If you get a BSOD:

0x101 = increase vcore
0x124 = increase/decrease vcore or QPI/VTT...have to test to see which one it is
0x0A = unstable RAM/IMC, increase QPI first, if that doesn't work increase vcore
0x1E = increase vcore
0x3B = increase vcore
0xD1 = QPI/VTT, increase/decrease as necessary
0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency or uncore multi unstable, increase RAM voltage or adjust QPI/VTT, or lower uncore if you're higher than 2x
0x116 = Low IOH (NB) voltage, GPU issue (most common when running multi-GPU/overclocking GPU)

But since you're running a low multiplier. Increasing the vcore is likely not necessary. If you completed the stress test successfully, restart back into bios and increase your bclk up 10MHz and save and reboot back into windows to test again and again until your find your highest stable bclk and write it down.

The guide is there to help you.

yea i thought i followed it exactly, but will try again tonight once im off work.

ill print the whole thing off instead of taking notes this time :-)

edit: i think the part i missed was setting the RAM freq as low as possible.
