My 6870 with 3x21inch acer's @5760x1080 will run any game except Metro 2033 and Crysis at max settings and it will crush a GTX480 in every way except tessellation.

6870 No Question.

GTX460 is best if you want to save money and still play games really high settings.
GTX470 has maybe the best performance, but is extremely hot.
HD6870 could have driver problems, but it's hit or miss on whether people are getting errors.
HD 5850 is pointless to buy, the GTX460 can go way past it when overclocked, and yes they can both be otherclocked, but for example my GTX460 gets to 900MHz core easy.

In terms of raw performance:

GTX470 > HD6870 > GTX460 > HD5850

In terms of best purchase:

GTX460 > HD6870 > HD5850 > GTX470

That's my idea anyway. I don't want something as hot as a 470 in my PC, and I dont want driver problems at all. The HD5850 also has the possibility for driver problems, and it doesn't have the NVidia features like CUDA or PhysX, and isn't nearly as good at tesselation.

I'd buy the GTX460, or if you can, a GTX570 but they will be expensive right now.

Are you for real?

"HD 5850 is pointless to buy" it overclocks to HD5870 clocks and higher
