Hyper212 Plus and Scythe KM02

I just put in a Scythe KM02 Fan Controller and everything is working fine except my Hyper 212 Plus. I'm pretty sure I need a different cable but I just figured I'd ask here.

The Scythe has a 3 pin connector but has extra space on it to fit the Hyper 212's 4 pin. Is the reason my fan isn't working the lack of power to the Hyper?

Also, is it safe to put the temp thingy right on the heatsink where the CPU is?

Is there any reason you can't run the 212+ off the mobo and leave the other fans on the controller?

I wanted to hook it up so I can manually change the speed of the fan while playing games and whatnot.
