Well in the current age of multi-core cpu's it's a non issue.. nowadays it's mainly for improving audio quality

same concept with either net on the bigfoot cards. there is one other plus of a sound card you can listen your music louder than on board they usually have a higher db output compared to on board

If you're using a digital output though, there is no need for a soundcard at all. The only time a soundcard CAN improve sound quality is when using analogue outputs.

It made a bigger difference when everyone was rocking Prescotts and Sledgehammers, but now they are mainly used to rape onboard sound quality in every way possible.

please enlighten me on the sound products you have heard to form this opinion. Of course you must know about the objective measurements involved.

onboard --> decent soundcard improves significantly due to far less distortion (most notably IMD) in the signal thus the signal is more accurate and in turn sounds better.

Ignorance is bliss.

Soundcards have never been about FPS performance since sub 1Ghz Pentium 2 and 3's.

It's not really 'louder', it's more dynamic range, in which humans are rather sensitive to.

see here as an example:

the higher the dynamic range, the better it sounds.

They used to be able to offload audio in some games but now that is not really a function and modern processors are so fast it wouldn't matter anyway.

Its all about sound quality, feature sets, and inputs/outputs. You typically get less noise on a sound card, better feature set, ie real time Dolby Digital encoding, and things like digital inputs for recording, DD decoding, etc. headphone amp, etc.

I recommend anyone who is curious to buy one from a store with a good return policy, like Fry's who let you return most products in 30 days for ANY reason. If you like it keep the card, if you can't tell a difference return it.

Ever sense i upgraded from onboard sounds cards too my pci cheap sound blaster audigy 2 se 7.1 their was a really nice difference in sound quality from just that card.

Than i upgraded too the sound blaster xfi titanium fatality and theres was even more of a difference and i could hear more stuff in my music and in games

Oh and you have more control over settings.

And when i had those i had Logitech 2300s 2.1 speakers and i could hear a difference even with those which i still think are decent speakers but now i have a real speaker setup onkyo sr308 receiver and 2 37in floor standing speakers and a cheap Philips sub which sounds pretty good

But ya not a waste of a pci e 1x or 4x slot thats if you enjoy music and sound quality .

well my xonar has a high sound to noise ratio it can go louder than my on board with out distorting it plus it does cap out higher on the db gran it quality might go down at max vol.
