What's wrong here?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Recently built a new PC about a month ago, here's a link to the specs.

So, I tried booting the machine up today and I'm getting the following error:

The data in the EC or EC flash might be corrupted.
Please contact ASUS Tech Support.
Fatal Error... System Halted

I tried contacting ASUS earlier today and they had me resetting the CMOS. However, this requires me to get into the BIOS setup, but the keyboard is not recognized until I get this system halted error, where no keyboard function works.

I can't get in contact with a Tech Support member right now from ASUS, so I was wondering if anyone else knows what is up with this thing??

clearing cmos doesnt require bios. just bridge the clrcmos jumpers on your motherboard or alternatiely remove the bios battery for a few minutes and then reinserting it.
Please update your system specs in your profile, its easier for us to help you, for example, if i knew what motherboard you had, i might be able to pinpoint for you which jumpers you need to bridge.

edit:

based on the specs link here is the answer for you:
Quote:
This board has a CLRTC jumper 'down' at the bottom.. right between USB78 and SATA1..

Generally , to do a CMOS reset, you umplug your system and removce the CMOS battery. Then shift the jumper on the CLRTC pins from 1&2 to 2&3. Then, while touching some bare metal part of your case, hoold in on the reset button on the front of your case for 30 seconds. Then shift the CLRTC jumper back to pins 1&2, replace the battery in its proper orientation, plug in and start the system. If the clearing was successful and the system boots, you will be asked to reset the time and date.

See the thing is I did that. After doing this though, I still receive the same Fatal Error.. System Halt.

I have no idea where to go/who to seek help from with this problem.

Do you get the red lights on the mobo? If yes then the mobo is defective...

Okay, so I spoke with ASUS Tech Support today. I flashed the bios to most recent version, same error occurring. They say I need a new BIOS chip. Does this sound like a possible solution? Or should I just ask for a replacement board tomorrow when I call up to order it.

If your mobo has the same Asus BIOS chip system as mine, replacing it is a piece of cake! They send you a chip, you unplug the current one, you plug the new one back in, and boom, you're back in business smile.gif

Do you remember how much shipping cost you and how long it took for you to receive the new bios chip? And thanks!
