Well, my card doesn't seem to like being unlocked It runs perfectly fine in benchmarks, furmark and a number of modern titles.

With unlocked shaders at stock 800/1250 I get random lockups (not bsod, gsod or reboot) in some games, mostly opengl ones. I've tried stock speeds at upto 1.2v to rule out a lack of voltage. The lockups happen somewhere between 2 seconds and 2 hours and I've experienced 30+ of them in verifying the issue. Various hardware/software changes have been tried to no avail.

Switching back to the stock bios I can run the same games at the quite heavy overclock of 980/1500/1.2v for 6+ hours without issue. The only conclusion I can come to is that some games are making heavy use of the extra shaders. If those shaders are unstable a lockup will happen. It appears some 6950s may well be lower binned 6970 parts.

I'm not too concerned mind you. I've so far compared 2 benchmarks (unigine heaven and metro2033) and get identical performance with or without the extra shaders. Only 3dmark11 shows 1.5%-3.8% drop in performance.

Guys... checking market ... i was going for a 6990 but ... damn ... i decided going the 2 card CF route.

I will water cool them and i will overclock them.

So, what do you think it's the best bet for 6970s ... I have great prices on Sapphire & XFX cards, but i was thinking on Sapphire ... are they ok ?

This one:

I have one of those black ones.

All I can say about Sapphire is, they're wonderful.

XFX RMA support in the USA is quite bad... There's been quite a few horror stories lately on this forum, I would rather choose Sapphire, they're pretty much the most reliable GPU brand for me on the ATI side.

You won't regret those cards, and they even have an improved fan, which is more quiet than the normal ones!

Plus, it also has Dual Bios

Those are a great choice, you won't regret going the 2 GPU route

It was actually to try and overclock higher, was trying out 1.4v @1075/1200, but kept crashing, so figured i'd try and cool with snow, for cooler temps
