I was thinking of going quad since my R3E supports quad fire, but another member told me scaling was not worth it for gaming. Might pick one up in a year when they are dirt cheap.

yeah, I've been wanting to know is there is some kind of difference between tri vs quad cfirex at least in vantage/11... thinking.gif

for benchmarks as long as the cpu can keep up. for gaming, I've been told by a member who tried it, didn't see any difference. best setup is tri-fire for gaming.

I have 2x Asus 6950's. Reference version with shaders unlocked.

Running stable in Crossfire with 1180mV at 925/1425.

Can post pics if necessary. ^_^

Dunno if you've seen CallsignVega's thread on his quad 580s or whatever monstrosity of awesomeness it is, but in his quest for the best, he had gone through quad 6970s IIRC, and the long discussion (I was following his build thread on HardOCP, before I knew of OCN) came across the interconnects between ATI cards, that people were thinking that for watever reason they just couldn't push the bandwidth through CF links that was necessary to get that fourth card scaling. Of course, that was just speculation (though they had some pretty good reasoning to support that claim, but it was just a claim).

Now, quad crossfire with 6990s may be different since the interconnects between the Cayman chips are onboard for each pair, so they may be able to move more data that way, but with separate 6970s, I believe it was a no-go.

Wermad, welcome to the club! I've been following your troubles in the other thread about the nickle plating. It's a real shame. The nickel is nice since you don't get the tarnishing that copper gets, but oh well, not worth the hassle to me after seeing this whole debacle. I'm very happy with Razor 6970s, though I'm sure you've been/you will research the heck out of your next waterblock. I sincerely hope you have better luck going forward!

Running 6970 crossfire. Like everyone else

Difference is i changed thermal paste on the coolers with the noctua NH-T1 and temps are lower than stock

If you mean by unlocking that you overclock the card then something around 860-900MHz on core with stock voltage should be doable. If you don't mind the noise the fan makes you could bump the fan speed up and up the voltage to 1.2V or 1.25V (max I would use 24/7 is 1.3V) and try out 925-950MHz. Really can't tell very accurately since every card is unique and you didn't tell us how warm your card runs. For the memory 1375-1450 is usually the range for the last stable overclock.

cool, so then tri cfx it is my 920 would prolly bottleneck that 4th gpu and if there's also no difference for gaming, then it's nonsense to buy a 2nd 6990..

If I bought 2x 6950's in xfire, would it be better performance than a single 6970?

Absolutely, unless the game did not support Crossfire well. Otherwise, 2x6950 is going to be fairly close to a 6990.
