1. this card should run cooler.
2. about the shaders.. wait. No way I can help you
3. The bus width is 128 bit :/ wth :/
4. Was it OPEN BOX ?? OR NOT ?? Must mention that too. If it was FULLY FACTORY sealed like you mentioned it to be so , well , the card could NOT have been flashed to a 6970 BIOS.. no1 usually does that .. except for ONE model on the market IIRC and that's not yours.
5. See the thread in my sig , this is how the card should turn out on unlocking + overclocking :

6. The device ID seems to suggest a 69xx only .. This may be inaccurate..

Advice ?? RMA it :/
OR ... run the windows experience index if u want to do it quick and dirty .. if it hits 7.8-7.9.. its definitely what you paid for .. but sorry, no way of telling you the shader count except for comparing benches at similar 6950 and 6970 clocks :/
Cause there's no way it'll hit that 7.8-7.9 score if it has a 128 bit bus..
Just to clear things up. As I said, quick and dirty FTW!!

cjc75, try using different versions of GPU-Z. It might be that your version is just reading the BIOS incorrectly.

I'm afraid that's not true. It is a reference card, and it draws lot more power than an HD6950, thus making more heat. It is not meant to run cooler than an HD5850, in fact, it is meant to run a lot hotter, so I'd say it is completely normal.

Just to clear things up. As I said, quick and dirty FTW!!

Actually, didn't notice that 128 bit bus... and now comparing my GPUz to yours, I see a lot of differences... Mind, I know yours is manually overclocked a hell of a lot more; but still... mine doesn't even list that its a Cayman GPU, while yours does...

Granted, I have a slightly older version of GPUz, so I'll update that when I get home tonight and see if there is anything different...

But I am starting to suspect more and more that someone may have previously bought the card, attempted to flash the bios and might not have done it correctly or something... or screwed something up on the card and took it back to Frys.. .

Then Frys reboxed it, resealed the box, and then RE-SHRINK WRAPPED the box, and resold it as brand new without knowing that the person who brought it back to them had already tampered with its BIOS.

Now, is it possible there is something in my Mobo BIOS regarding that 128/256 bus that I've missed or forgotten about? I .. KNOW .. I have 256 bus, as I went and pulled up my pic of my 5850, which does report on GPUz that its running at 256... so either maybe something in my Mobo Bios got reset recently and I didn't notice... or this card is Fubared?

I'll try that when I get home tonight, I know my version is a little older and needs to be updated.

I suspected that to be the case, makes sense...

I am considering doing an RMA and seeing if they will exchange it for the MSI Twin Frozr II model that they have at the same price. I just won't get the rebate... and everything I read about it says that its unlockable as well but runs a lot cooler considering its got a way better cooling system on it.... and if anyone unlocks/flashes my card then its going to be me.

A shame though, I was looking forward to owning a Diamond again, the very first vid card that I bought, was a Diamond Voodoo2 like back in '98/99... and hadn't owned a Diamond since then... and I like their warranty too.

But if this card runs hotter then most other 6950's, then thats not too good cause it tends to get VERY hot in my apartment, especially during these late summer months. I ran Heaven Bench on it, and it ran up to 90 celsius on that one, while my 5850 doesn't even touch 80 on Heaven...

So I might take this card back to Frys tomorrow, and see if they will take it back in exchange for the MSI...

Can't wait to hear their reaction when I tell them someone screwed them out of a $300 card by almost bricking its bios...

Updated GPUz Report

This looks a heck of a lot more accurate...

Properly shows 256 bit bus, and appears to be accurately reporting all other information...

So this looks like its been legitimately flashed to a 6970 to me.. either that, or it came like this, new sealed in the box.

Can't imagine why anyone would deliberately flash it, and then take it back to the store... I've had it installed for about 24 hours and sure even though thats not much time, it seems to be running stable and haven't had any problems with it yet...

So, all I can think of, is it came like this sealed in its box?

Oh and.. here is the "quick and the dirty" that Orazor1 suggested!

Sooo... maybe I am wrong about all this, its NOT been messed up with a bad flash attempt, it seems legit... this is a 6970 clothed as a 6950?

Does it look like I really did get a wolf in sheeps clothing?

I think I will for awhile...

I can't imagine how this happened... if someone flashed this, and then returned it to Frys after doing so, then I can only guess they maybe also had an older version of GPUz and after checking, thought they screwed the Flash... and took it back.

Either that, or Diamond shipped it this way!

I'm going to enjoy this card for awhile...

Though that 90 - 92 Temp reading makes me a little nervous, whats the max that these cards should run, comfortably, under heavy load? IE; Crysis 2 with DX11 patch and Hi Res Textures Patch, and/or other/similar high graphic demanding games?

Now in summer I'd keep the fan @ 45-55%, it shouldn't be going above 80ºC.

90-92ºC is a bit too much.

Get some watercooling in there My cards don't run above 48 degrees at full load while gaming! And that's at 1000/1480 @ 1.275
