I would like to get a little advise from you guys, on my new Diamond HD6950 2G card.

I originally, had the Reference Version of the card, which I bought as an open box from FRYS; they had repackaged it as a new product after it was previously returned to their store. After keeping it for a few weeks to test it, I took it back to the store due to frequent crashes and they gave me an even exchange on a replacement; even let me pick the new one off their shelf.

The new one, with identical box, packaging, and identical part number; is a newer revision of the Diamond card.

A shorter PCB, with a Dual Fan cooling system that runs much better then the original Reference design, I've found this one runs 20c cooler then the Reference... But it STILL has a Dual BIOS Switch on it!

diamondhd6950.jpg

So far, it seems to be running great. Its destroying everything I've thrown at it and bearly breaking a sweat doing it; and it still appears to have some great overclocking headroom... From its stock 6950 configuration, it lets me crank it up to 950 on the core, while the original reference would only let me crank up to 840.

So now I am contemplating putting that Switch into its Second Position and doing a Flash to try and unlock the Shaders since after all, isn't that what the switch is for?

I've been reading this...
http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/899639-6950-6970-unlock-thread.html

...and I've been reading this...
http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/159

My only concern however is that I have not been able to find any information anywhere out there regarding this newer revision on the Diamond Card with its shorter PCB.

I have found only a couple "reviews" related to it; one on Amazon and one on Newegg and both seem to imply that the shorter PCB with a dual fan, is a bad design.

So basically, this is a NON-Reference designed card, WITH a Dual BIOS Switch...

I'm sure there are some others out there with other non-reference 6950's from other manufacturers, who have attempted unlocks... SO, what I want to know, before I attempt any unlock flashing; is what are the potential Pros and Cons of this combination of a non-reference design with a dual bios switch, and whats the potential outcome of unlocking it?

Does the newer PCB possibly have some parts on it that might not be capable of handling certain aspects of an unlock? If so, then why would they include the dual switch?

Do you know if your card will work with the BIOS flashing software? If it does, you'll either need to get a firmware that has been modified for your card, or you'll have to get someone to modify a copy of your firmware to enable the extra shaders. Who knows how much the firmware diverges from the reference firmware? The nice thing about the switch is you can try a few things without worrying about bricking your card. Make sure you make a copy of the currently installed firmware in case you need it.

@cjc75:
The cards typically come with the standard bios selected, so leave the switch the way it is.

As for should you try it, I vote yes. If the flashing doesn't work, you can easily put back the original bios you backed up before hand.

Reference / non-reference doesn't really mean anything to this software mod.

What do you mean by the potential outcomes of unlocking it? You should be able to figure that out, but I'll do it for you.
A: it unlocks. w00t.
B: it doesn't unlock. frown.gif
C: you have to put the original bios back to use the card (if you don't flip the switch)
D: you brick it.

The PCB doesn't need to have or not have anything. It comes down to a few simple things: non-laser cut shaders/a "new" 6950 lacking the extra shaders, and using the right bios. I would suggest using the RBE modification method, as you're changing as little as possible with that method.
