It would suck if your monitor started acting up too. Don't these things come in threes?
I don't know if you'd be interested in doing this, but many monitors over the last five or so years have had problems with poor capacitors in the power supply. If one of my monitors started blanking out like you describe and it was no longer under warranty, I would remove the rear bezel and check the capacitors in the power supply. If they have vented, or are domed on top they should be replaced. It would be nice to catch the problem before the backlight driver IC shorts or the backlights are damaged (assuming it's a cclf backlit monitor and not an LED backlit monitor).
Having just replaced your video card though you're in a sort of tough spot for troubleshooting. Could be a new card issue or could be a monitor issue. I've never seen a GPU do what you describe, but I've seen lots of monitors do it.
Edit: Never seen a GPU that wasn't undergoing a driver installation do the multiple blanking out thing.Edited by Mergatroid - 11/22/11 at 5:15pm
